    Update folks: The house is fine, no water ingress, except what looks like a tiny bit in the bouanderie. The expected mud to the front of the place is not there so I suspect someone has cleaned up. Which is very nice.

    If we are talking home cooking then French cooking on a par with British but less adventurous, the staple diet being pizza or bad meat. British medium priced restaurants are much more adventurous and varied than French though both are expensive these days. Belgian is pricey but very very goood. Of course, IMVWIO! (Just so members know there is irony there and an attempt to get healthy discussion going.)

    I am having a few days away at the moment but watching to see if my house floods and relying on my neighbours to tell me. But here is the quandary; should I rush home now and watch the flood waters, unable to significantly stop any serious water ingress or finish my holiday first? The first sounds attractive but might achieve little, the second rather laid back. Whichever way, if water gets in, the place will be a mess!

    Thus far there is the usual mud layer on the front garden but it does not seem to have got to the front door; Bobo knows what has happened to the bouanderie which is sous le sol!🤬

    Ah, albf, you are clearly in the dark; I know one excellent forum which has a banner at the top ‘albf need not apply’.

    As to how many members we have, that is a difficult one. There are those in name only whose posts have been banned, those who are dead but who still manage to post from the Great Yonder( Henry, just so you know, this is a yoke 🙀), those who simply watch, those who post occasionally and those who post frequently. Oh, and those who gabble like a flock of turkeys on speed 🙀. All are welcome.

    There is a great interest in France and matters French plus a wide knowledge of where to go and how to find ‘stuff’ as well as healthy discussion, even today someone regretting the passing of nipple greasers. Is that a sign of old age or old habits?

    Since we got over (inshallah) our software problems and invaders we seem to be sailing well under the new owners who are keen to the forum to continue.

    Have a Happy New Year everyone; I am in London where I shall join the annual conga from Oxford Street to Parliament Square, oil protesters welcome! 🙀 Meanwhile off to the National Gallery for my regular visit to one or two particular and much loved paintings, NOT ones with hideous naked charubs.

    Well, I do seem to have broken the yolk when trying to poach a perfect egg, which is always a bother. Still, it tastes the same. I do try to maintain a strict attitude about language and thoughts which might land us and our owners in the ducking pond. Sometimes it would be nice to let rip but not on this forum.

    Henry, obviously you do not like being addressed as love or dear so perhaps I might suggest you nominate a word - you may NOT have any word with wooly or banana in it. Those belong to my daughter!

    Have you had to do with Norman yet? I’ll see if he has finished his carnal Xmas celebrations and is able to join the fun.

    Alternatively, lighten up a bit, relax, feel the life enhancing flow of the grape or the grain or other substance as they wipe away the blues, Grinchy moments and general detritus of the old year. It is worth it.

    May I wish you and yours the happiest and most satisfying Yule, full of good cheer, good food and good friendship. And may you smile at the thought that the shortest day is passed and we can begin clawing back to the light.

    Here are some ways I expect ypu are celebrating Yule, enjoy:

    Yule Celebrations

    We have records indicating the Old Norse pagans celebrated with four traditions:

    An Offering (blót) - A farm animal would be sacrificed and displayed in front of their home, so people knew what animals were being honoured for the gods. The blood of the animals would be sprinkled on alters, walls and participants using magical twigs. The sacrifice would be cooked over a hearth's fire and served to the hall.

    1. Feasting - There would be celebratory drinking of mead and feasting of the sacrificed animals. Cups would be raised in honour of gods and ancestors: Odin for victory and power, Niord and Freyja for peace and a good season, and for departed friends and family buried in mounds.

    2. Yule Oaths - Oaths sworn on this day were unbreakable by pagan law. You could promise anything you wanted, but there were heavy consequences if you broke it. In some cases breaking the ultimate oath could result in death.

    3. Yule Gifts - Not much is said about what was gifted back in the historical heathen days, but from the sagas, we have mention of people offering Yule gifts to merchants and friends.
