1.
Depending on your viewpoint of course - that doesn't sound enough for the whole World, surely George, my thought precisely but the article said this figure was based on a 1999 US study. Started ...
I wonder if they have a number, bridges seem to, lamp posts do, telegraph polls do and pylons do, the mind boggles with the possibilities of counting them all. Who's responsible for the database and do they have a number - help!
2. "they continue to build them at the rate of 1,000/annum, accounting for 50% of the world’s total of 35,000" Depending on your viewpoint of course - that doesn't sound enough for the whole World, surely
3.  "Thank you both for the info, it's a shame that it's not possible to use the digibox EPG to programme the recorder but I think I'll get one anyway as burning to DVD is a great way to keep films shown on the TV"Steve You could of course think about the Sky+ box, which includes a hard disk and can record progs (those which you aren't watching as well), all from the EPG, with those same catch up facilities provided by DVD recorders. I don't have it myself and therefore no expert, I'm sure someone else here could guide you.  Worth looking into before buying a recorder, although would the cost justify it?
4. Steve We bought one of these about a month ago, a Pioneer.  Yes it will record from a Sky digibox via the scart plug therefore only record the channel as set on the digibox.  It also has an inbuilt tuner, which can record via the aerial any of the available analogue channels.  We only use it in UK at the moment, so not sure what the situation would be with secam. Hope that's of some help
5. hi Dennis Re Brico Depot, no they don't have a web site, well not yet anyway.  As part of the Kingfisher group, it looks promising when you get to their site, but only job vacancies then seem to be available.
6. hi John Thanks for that, must admit I hadn't even considered them and they have a new place not too far from me in Kent! Think I'll make a visit while off work next week, might find a better scraper too.
7. Many thanks for that will look that one up - think the existing paint is relatively new, but peeling quite badly in some places, which will help us and appears to be nothing underneath.  Can't wait to give it a try when we get back over.
8. Does anyone have any suggestions for woodstain on stripped white painted windows. ie any particular make such as Sadolin more sucessful than another. Have previously had reasonable success with Ranch stain in UK, but not sure this is still available. Would like to keep the existing peeling painted windows, strip them in situ with a hot air gun, then use a dark woodstain over the top. Guess the putty will be a problem to cover adequately. Then eventually replace the plastic shutters with new wood ones, trying to match as near as possible the colour of the window frames.
9. "I'll let you know what transpires when I summon up the courage to give it a go..." Angela Your web site has been of great assistance to me these past few years and realising how concerned you are, would be happy to try it for you. Just PM or email me and I will let you have my postal address in UK.  I will though be in France until Easter weekend.
10. "But a bit later on - maybe I made a slightly clumsy manoeuvre while dragging files to the flash drive (shown as "removable drive E") - the whole computer screen suddenly went blue, and some disaster message came up.  I am afraid I can't remember the words, but the gist was that it couldn't go on copying, and I should press any key to return to Windows. It was one of those vicious circles, where you can't actually get it to do anything else useful, so I rebooted the computer (still with the flashdrive plugged in).  Opened up all right.  But when I looked in Windows Explorer for the flashdrive, thinking that a reboot would have fixed the problem, that "removable drive E" was no longer shown." Angela When system crashes occur, any drivers you have just installed may not be present after a reboot as Windows tries to recover itself, which probably accounts for why the USB drive wasn't present. The Recycled bin is a "normal" feature for Windows, my guess is that it was there, but maybe not noticed or may have been in a different area of the tree originally? either way it sounds like it was working as files were dumped to it. Something caused a crash during the copying process, perhaps a memory fault, a driver problem, perhaps the version of 98 may be slightly different eg B instead of C. or may be another issue, it may also be something to do with a firewall or anti virus software.  Tricky to pin down now, but the fact is that the USB stick should not itself be the problem.  If it were me, I would try it on my own pc, but understand your reluctance.  So if your supplier is convenient and willing to give it a go then let him.
11. Guess I'll just have to keep looking then - out of interest and using these examples, just how would the French pronounce Rouen? and is there an equivalent of "BBC" French.
12. For help with place names try It's taken a while, but finally found something that works for me:- http://www.answers.com and as an example http://www.answers.com/rouen then click on the speaker symbol

14. Di If using Win XP, you will find you can also just drag and drop to the writer (not too sure about DVD though, never tried it).  Nero is excellent these days though the writers often come with just the cut down Express version, but have found this to be just as reliable for my home needs.
15. I'm sure he can see a future spin off - the Corporate Training films market as in the John Cleese type and how not to do it.
16. "A couple of weeks ago I had a bit of a disaster with my computer and wiped off practically everything so I had to re-install including the browser. I can now get a lot of the facilities such as Control Panel and Search that I couldn't get before, so every cloud ...." Liz Hope you don't mind my asking.  I'm presuming you are using Win XP and ask if you remember if you had upgraded your old machine from 98 or was it a new install.  I have a theory that is hard to prove without collecting other users experiences.  Several of us have had problems like this and I have 2 identical machines at home and work which act differently.  One was an upgrade the other a new install - have spent several weeks checking every setting that I can find, every patch and I think virtually every program to find the problem.  Convinced it has to be to do with this
17. Di When you get some spare time you might want to have a look at:- http://www.videohelp.com/ Should explain a few things.... and maybe raise a few more questions too.
18. "If you are in Kent, you are GMT. France is GMT+1. What is showing is CET." hi Ray Think I got caught out by a bit of caching - however it does say at the top of the Forum, just below Home and Search that all times are in GMT
19. Seems like you guys are a bit ahead of me, just wanted to see what time I posted this (19:17 by my clock).  Is it Spring already?
20. Angela Another possibility, in my computer, right click on the drive, go to properties and see what options you have.  Anything there to check the drive etc?
21. Angela Some USB flash drives have a small button/slider that can be moved to lock the files, keeping them safe from being erased. Not sure about the PNY, but check all over it to see if anything like that, you may have moved it accidently?
22. hi Shirley http://www.lapeyre.fr/Lapeyre/pub.accueil.PreHomeController.do?event=show http://www.pointp.fr/pp_home/pages/pp_home.shtml
23. This link has links to several map sites, some of which are well known but some I've not seen before and thought might be of interest:- http://www.hir-net.com/link/map/france-e.html
24. Have just tried it and seem to get up to the point of entering personal details ok, but did choose a date in Feb. There is this message on the front page though "Due the overwhelming number of visits to this site following the BBC documentary featuring SpeedFerries, you may experience disruption accessing sections of it. We are working to resolve this as soon as possible and apologise for the inconvenience. If you do experience problems please try again later."
25. "Patrick As a matter of interest, do you also see the formatting controls when you send a reply etc." No, George, I'm afraid I don't. But at least I can get the Control Panel." Thanks Patrick Just interested to see what works in each of the browsers - oddly enough with an identical setup at work IE is ok, but can't seem to recreate the same at home.  Just have to decide which will be more important at the time.  Starting to wonder if its anything to do with XP being an upgrade at home rather than fresh install - apart from ISP, only other difference I can think of.
