  1. I'm sure this has probably been answered before, but I can find no reference. Is Capital Gains Tax payable on profit made from the sale of a property or the whole amount.

    Thanking everyone in advance.

  2. Can anyone tell me what the norm regarding felt under slates is in France.

The battens I looked at in Point P did not look treated. So do they use a breathable felt or just ordinary.

    Thanks in advance.

  3. Building regs give 9x2s on 400 centres 4.79 metres. It is actually the flat roof of a single storey extension that will one day (in the distant future) be a sun terrace.

    Thanks

  4. 9 x 2 is a standard size for UK joists, spaced at 400 centres they will span the 4.8 metres I need.

If 75 x 225 (3 x 9) is the norm in France then so be it. I t just means I can space them at 450 instead.

Assuming that madrier means joist or such in French, what does 'bastaing' mean please.

    Thanks for info

  5. I'm going over twice next month, my intention is to buy the oak, store some at our barn, take what I need back to the UK, build the necessary and transport back again. It'll probably be cheaper than buying in the UK. I do have a small planer/thicknesser that I could take over but it wouldn't be man enough for the larger timber.

What do you mean by 'small' quantities.

  6. We are south of Vire, just outside a small village called Gathemo. My workshop is the UK at the moment although I will be moving equipment out once the workshop is built. I need the oak for the doors/window frames.

  7. We're renovating a barn in Basse Normadie and have started the plumbing. However we are going out on Friday afternoon 4th May and need to get fittings for use that night. Does anyone know of a Le clerc or other suitable supplier on the way from Eurotunnel along the A16 towards Le Havre. We think we saw one at Boulogne but from the Motorway we are not too sure which one it was.

    Thanks in advance

  8. Having read some of the postings on this website, we are thinking of opening a Paint shop in the Poitou Charente area and as part of the market research for this project we would like the views of the people that could be purchasing from us.

The points we need to clarify are:

Location: Would the shop need to be in a large village or are people prepared to travel, and if so how far.

Stock: What sorts of paints are required.

Delivery: Would a same day delivery service (at a premium obviously) be useful.

Opening hours: With many people working weekends would a short opening period (if allowed) on Sundays be useful.

We are at present researching prices, suppliers and laws etc, regarding the above.
  9. My wife, three children and I are seriously considering moving to the Poitou Charente area. The original plan was to convert and let out gites, but from messages on this website and other sources that idea does not seem able to sustain a reasonable lifestyle. The main point is how much work is there for a carpenter/cabinet maker in this general area.
    Can anyone help?
    Gary.
