  1. Satellite has an inherent latency due to the satellite being over 30,000 Kilometres from Earth, this is normally for a one way journey ½ second so 1 second for a round trip earth – satellite - earth.   This does not affect transmission of large files such as MP3 however for small object base files such as HTTP, Telnet then it can become very slow.  The Good news is that most satellite operators have installed PEP or performance enhancement protocol that tricks HTTP and Telnet into thinking there is no delay and improves your surfing experience.  I hope this is makes sense but if you want more info don’t hesitate to ask.   As for companies offering two way services I would suggest that you use a DVB RCS terminal which is based on open standards so should work with other providers if you decide to change your provider.  Try www.satlynx.com or www.hispasat.com or a small English company www.avanti-communications.com.   Finally don’t expect to pay the price of a normal ADSL connection as satellite is far more expensive.
  2. Most satellite providers reduce or increase the power in accordance to with weather conditions, generally in the night the cloud mass thins allowing the satellite provider to reduce transponder power however this should have no affect on the reception in your home.  I would suggest that your friend has his installation checked as I suspect that either the antenna has not been pointed correctly or his LNB needs to be replaced.
  3. sorry for not making that clear, Diana why would you want to move to France and continue to live under another countries tax system. I have lived in France for 12 years and as time goes on I hear more and more horror stories of English people moving to France and not trying to integrate into the French system, both culturally and financially speaking.   When I moved here it was for a change in the way I lived my life and frankly I have no regrets paying more money in tax (even if it is a lit on the heavy side) I have gained in so many other ways.   For Diana,  This is what you get for your money   The number 1 health service in the world Public transport that works Roads without traffic jams(well most of the time) Cheap housing Great museums Wonderful countryside Wonderful food and wine But most of all a life changing experience that should (if you want it to) change your perspective on the true values of life.
  4. Our pool is heated, it’s not as expensive as you may think but of course this depends largely on the outside temperature and the temperature that you want the water to be. The only down side is that I had to get EDF to update the electricity supply to the house to handle the extra charge!
  5. Your attitude leaves me in despair.  Stay in England!
  6. I have been doing this for 7 years now and frankly I find the tax system repressive.  I pay 35% in standard charges and about 15 % in income tax (I also have 3 kids) but unfortunately my revenue is obviously to high.  Above this you then have to take into account health care for your family, professional insurances for home and car and payments for pension.  You basically looking at 65 % globally which is not a good deal.
