Now ALBF, I can't let you get away with that.

A cursory look at trip advisor and I've found 'Le Chaperon Rouge' in Avenue de Grammont, Tours which, amongst other things, has a children's menu for 10 euros which consists of a galette or steak hache/chips, a drink, and a crepe or an ice cream. Their most expensive galette which contains foie gras and smoked duck costs 18 euros. If your family of 5 contains three adults who all had the most expensive item on the menu you'd still have 26 euros left over for drinks.

    Hmmm……Avenue de Grammont ?…..eek

     🤔

Not a street I would go down personally.

  2. Another one….

Family of five Christmas Eve meal in a pub (of course) in a prime location in Winchester. Old pub lovery decor.  Great atmosphere.

Carol singers singing in the road, town hall all lit up, peeps happy.

Merry xmas merry xmas merry xmas everywhere.

    101 pounds.

A crepe and desert in Tours any day of the week for a family of five will be a lot more.

  3. Sorry for your loss also.

    Just be careful of scams.

That tax hab is quite high !

What I am saying is, just make sure that tax bill is legitimate before paying.

Alarm bells are ringing in my head.

They do have other dishes Mint 😁

somewhere to grab a bite to eat at St Pancras and a branch came up. When ALBF started talking about the costs of salads I was reminded of the menu.

When we caught the night sleeper from Euston to Scotland we ate at a pub/ restaurant in the station.

The food was excellent again and no way near the prices of Normans overpriced tourist restaurant in Beziers.

I'm sorry ALBF. I know you love all things north of the Channel but I can't believe that you were able to get 'a proper posh hotel meal' for 14 pounds a head. The ingredients alone should cost more than that.

    Two kids meals !

Oh and I don’t eat a starter or desert.
Drinks I paid for at the bar.

It was around about that price. Maybe a tad more but it was not over 90 for sure.

Now the funny thing is, when we went to pay the hotel bill in the morning they forgot to include the meal. They thought I paid it the night before and I could have of said…ooh yes that right I did. But being good boy I said no.

They found the bill and happily paid.

"Not much on the menu for a 80% vegetarian like me. "

How about this then? Another place where I can watch the preparation through  the window into the kitchen

That menu is for tourists with tourist prices to match. No one pays that unless you are holiday.

That is not everyday French food.

For a family of five the bill will come over 120 euros in that restaurant.
    Likewise with any crêperie.

    Mc Dos….35 euros I reckon.

    Kabab….probably the same.

We ate at a local cafe in Kyle of Lochalsh (family of 5) in November and the bill came to 45 pounds. You could not fault the food or the portions. It was delicious. Too much in fact.

We ate a proper posh hotel meal (family of 5) in a glam hotel in Scotland where the food was just exceptional. It was exceptional. And the people there were so polite and nothing was a problem. 70 pounds for that loverly experience.

French food is overated and over priced.

I am not paying 16 euros for a salad. For crying out loud.

OK Mr French. One David Lister has just gone through the motions of applying for a lost National Insurance number via this website.

    https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/fill-online/get-your-national-insurance-number-by-post

I put in a French address and telephone number, my date of birth, and the fact that I was married. Apart from that the only information they wanted was a copy of a birth certificate, passport, or driving license. You fill out the form and post it to the address given along with the identity document.

It might take some time but there's no reason it shouldn't work.

How do you upload a birth certificate?….if you can find it ? Lol

    French driving license works ?

I worked in the UK  for 55 years I never had a plastic NI card, and I paid full contributions, plus graduated pension during the 1980s, that system only lasted for about 10 years

I have a plastic credit card one….or used too.

    I thought everyone did ? ?

  9. 25 minutes ago, DaveLister said:

Are you saying you never worked in the UK?

I had before Uni, during Uni and then a couple of years after Uni.

    And then France.

i have no payslips or that plastic NI card. That has been lost years ago.

Just checking online to find your old NI number…..I can’t provide that info.

My plan of moving back to the UK in 10 years time is looking a tad difficult.

This is a ridiculous question: it is difficult to defines "French" food  since there is  such a large range of regional dishes; and personal taste affects the idea of 'rating'

Who eats that though ? Who can afford it ?

The staple diet of most around ere (which is representative France) is Pizza, Kabab, Sushi, Bagal…and Lidl frozen food made….not in France.

Pizza out of a wall not a restaurant btw.

  11. Meteo France is certainly not fit for purpose. They forecast by looking out the window in Paris.

Thursday evening google said on Oh’s phone that there was a 70% chance of snow during the night. I checked the meteo on TV and MF online and there was not a cloud to be seen on their charts. So we concluded it was rubbish.

Next morning I got up early and sure enough it had snowed. Well done MF.

So yeah, if want to know the wether forecast, ask google.

    Dont trust MF.

ALBF, you may remember I wrote about Attal here on the forum several months ago, perhaps going to be the president after the next election.

    I remember your post mint.

The thing is, every problem in France today revolves around the utterly unacceptable French educational system. Everything.

France is falling apart because schooling is not fit for purpose. It is just plain awful.

He is/ was / could have been the man to sort it out. And the rest of France with it.

Now he has got another job.

So a pointless promotion just to try and save Macron’s and the EU’s face without sorting out the real issue.

    Which won’t happen.

    Why?

It is the normal reshuffle around the middle of the President's 5 year term.

Attal has been announced as the new PM. No surprise there.

Le Pen is way ahead of Macron in the forthcoming EU elections. No surprise there.

Attal comes across as a good bloke that may (or may not) sought things out and he is a vote winner.

People are utterly fed up with the useless EU institution and he may persuade them otherwise.

Trouble is, he was the educational minster and the French educational system is completely and utterly diabolical. It is not fit for purpose.

He was the man for the job to fix it….and he is no longer in the job. I had faith in him.

So who now sorts that educational mess out ?

Macron clinging onto power at the sake of the country.

Sorry, didn't mean to be flippant or irreverent.  If you are anything like me, I can't at the moment see anything too much to look forward to.  Not personally and certainly not more generally.

    Turn off the news Mint.

    It is that easy.
