You may not be aware that the proposed but now cancelled CT for bikes was for all bikes over 125 cc,  so not including the death-trap scooters and mopeds that are either not maintained at all or suffer from teenage mechanic's attentions.

They were excluded from the proposed CT so as not to cause the riders who were mostly from low-income backgrounds, a financial burden apparently!

Being an apprentice trained engineer,  having worked for a well known engine manufacturer and subsequently a partner in an engine and transmission shop I carry out all my own maintenance on the basis that I take care of what I'm doing,  the majority of dealer workshops don't.

Now having a working forum again I thought I  remind all motorcyclists that since this thread in 2022 the CT is now live again and came into force on April 15th 2024.

It's a bit of a shambles at the moment - lack of trained testers.

"I have asked at various CT stations near me recently and none are going to actually do the test at all. A DEKRA station tester said his training was not until September / October and he couldn’t make any appointments yet. I explained I had  6 motos that would all need to be checked before the September 29th deadline and he did the usual shrug of the shoulders. May be I will just take a chance and take the €90 fine - unless there are points deducted as well"

    (no points are deducted)

From a biker in 72130 Alpes

Quote off the record from a controller (tester)

"I shouldn't say it, but I advise motorcyclists to take their test as soon as possible, because it will be lighter. All the equipment will probably only be available in the first half of 2025."

This time the CT is compulsory for all powered two wheelers and three and four wheelers not covered by the current car test.

or maybe they are just drought stricken. I've lost a cherry and a mulberry over the last 12 months.

    Drought?

Breizh Meteo  rainfall records for Pontivy observatory - 12 km from us

    jan 2024 129.4 mm
    feb 2024 116.4
    mar 2025 97.2
    april 2024 57.4

I think it's possibly a long drawn out period of cold wet but not freezing weather, and the hedge dropped it's leaves to protect itself, our birch trees were very late budding and coming into leaf also.

The hedge is fine now. You will note that https://temperature.global/ shows an average trend 2015 to 2024 of  - 0.254 C cooling.

  3. Replying to my own post here:-

Observing some signs of the variance of plant growth in our own garden, the fact that the variegated privet hedge some 25 metres long along the road boundary of our property lost it's leaves totally this last winter and was still bare in mid March, the first time this has happened since we arrived in 2009, no sign of any infection etc, and a large flowering cherry putting out the worst show of blossom again since 2009, leads me to think that the global boiling brigade are talking up their agenda, rather than telling it like it is.

I've heard that some dealers are cool with taking your UK car when you're buying from them. It's like a trade-in, so you skip all the hassle of selling it privately or sorting out the import process solo. Carwow has this feature.

Carwow is a UK company - how does that work in France?

South East France (Perpignian area) is becoming a desert. They are seriously in the mèrde. That area is becoming lost.

Do you want rain or not rain ?

    Welcome to the new world.

Sooner or later nowhere in France will be insurable.

  6. Portsmouth has only two ferry operators using the facilities , Brittany Ferries and Condor.

They don't have a dedicated freight terminal. Crossing times are long, fuel is expensive, so cost of crossing is high, as BF passengers know only too well.

Dover on the other hand has a dedicated freight/cargo terminal. Crossing times are much shorter so much cheaper.

Ferry operators using Dover are DFDS Dover>Calais, DFDS Dover >Dunkirk, Irish Ferries Dover >Calais and P & O dover >Calais

In addition, the road distance to Calais for fresh food exports from the Netherlands, Belgium, and  Northern France is shorter than to Caen, St Malo, Le Havre.

Nothing to do with Brexit, a lot to do with crossing times, cost and freight handling facilities.

  7. Enlarging the story in the Midi Libre report  - Fine of 270 euros etc

"He ultimately won't have to pay. The SNCF decided on Wednesday to cancel the fine of 270 euros imposed on a passenger of the Paris-Lyon TGV who had exchanged his second class seat with another first class traveler, reports BFMTV .

Hugues, a young passenger(in second class seat) had indeed agreed to exchange places to allow a father (in first class seat) to be next to his son (in second class seat). But that was without counting on the controllers. The conductor strictly applied SNCF rules and sanctioned the young man for not having a first class ticket. And this despite the intervention of the father of the family.

    A “rare” situation
Offended by the lack of understanding of the railway company agents , Hugues decided to share his misadventure on social networks .

“No one has been wronged in the story, all the seats have been paid for, but because of two cowboys who think they are in the wild west, the SNCF is being hated even more,” he lamented on X ( formerly Twitter).

raratouille is just tasteless hunks of veggies, often the leftovers from the bottom of the fridge!

Let’s add favourites; squashes for me.

Aldi ratatouille in a can is excellent - nice crunchy, slightly undercooked veggies in a tasty sauce.

Are you declining to take part in the 'mea culpa', 'we're all doomed', ecolo hysteria, Harnser? 😁  How refreshing!  I wish I had your ability to come up with trenchant counter-arguments backed up by facts. Seriously.

The"we're all doomed', ecolo hysteria" is a narrative originally created by the United Nations.

What if a small group of world leaders were to conclude that the principal risk to the Earth comes from the actions of the rich countries?... In order to save the planet, the group decides: Isn't the only hope for the planet that the industrialized civilizations collapse? Isn't it our responsibility to bring that about?   Maurice Strong of the UN.

Just about everything published today by the mainstream media on climate, weather, is designed to support that narrative.

There is currently a co-ordinated campaign of misinformation by an organisation called Covering Climate Now.

Covering Climate Now (CCNow) is an advocacy organization operating out of the Columbia Journalism Review (CJR) at Columbia University in New York, USA.  Their purpose is to spread fear and alarm about  – or as they say “raise public awareness of” — what they claim is a “Climate Emergency” or “Climate Crisis”

Their approach is to feed pre-written stories, editorial narratives and shared resources to magnify the voices of alarm to convince the world’s people that there is a Climate Crisis that demands everyone giving up fossil fuels, access to inexpensive electrical power, air travel, natural gas heating and cooking and the myriad other benefits of modern life that are a normal part of our developed societies.   In addition, they provide story-sharing opportunities where stories in one media outlet can be freely re-posted/re-published to another, or used as the basis for “original” re-writing at another media outlet.

    "When the AMOC switches off"

A predicted catastrophic event which will have devastating consequences for places further south than Scotland.  Would be ironic if the climate refugees started a reverse trend in boats across the Channel!

The Scientific Advances’ study’s conclusion is predicated on a single climate model, the Community Earth System Model (CESM), projecting far into the future and it’s also predicated on an amount of ice melt that has not happened in our lifetimes. Even then, the CESM had to have its pump primed with unrealistic meltwater data in order for the researchers to come to the conclusion they got. What they did was to run the model, then add modeled freshwater very gradually to the modeled North Atlantic, presumably simulating a melting of the Greenland ice which might shut down the AMOC.

There’s only one problem; the amount of freshwater from melting that they injected into the model is about five times the actual amount of ice available in Greenland to melt."

So it's very much a fake news scenario.

  11. I've not got a wood pellet stove/heater nor any plans to get one, but you should be aware of the variable cost of the pellets.

    https://www.connexionfrance.com/article/French-news/If-you-heat-French-home-with-wood-pellets-now-may-be-good-time-to-buy

    https://www.lemonde.fr/en/economy/article/2022/11/14/amid-europe-s-energy-crisis-france-s-wood-pellet-industry-is-feeling-the-heat_6004266_19.html

Pellet stoves got popular, now the supply side for pellets is getting tighter.

If you do get to using wood pellets be aware of the dangers of storing them - they can give off carbon monoxide and there have been fatalities involved.

And now the fishermen are trying their luck. What are they wingeing about?

Two recent events - the price of the diesel fuel they must use, the marginal profitabilty of their boats depends to a large extent on the price of the fuel, a few cents per litre increase means they are running at at a loss because of the amount they use.

And Biscay fishermen are on a month's lay off to protect dolphins which get caught in the nets - breeding season etc.

If I were American, I'd vote for Biden regardless of whether I think he will be the better candidate.  Would just love to see what Trump will do this time should Biden beat him once more to the White House.

What shade of orange will his face turn?  Where would he encourage his horde of rough necks to rampage?  The Pentagon, Fort Knox, where?  Which lawyer or judge will he try to bribe or threaten to demand a recount?

I cannot understand why the system in the USA can select a convicted sex offender, proven serial liar and fraudster as the best of the best of the best representative of their country.  Even religious people support him.

To me it says for more about the values of the country than just the man

Then again, Boris (who I understand is getting paid £1,000,000 for his column) has written supporting him, which puts the UKs views in the same bucket!

"I cannot understand why the system in the USA can select a convicted sex offender"

You need to understand that Donald Trump is not a convicted sex offender. It was a civil case not a criminal prosecution.

    https://eu.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2023/05/16/no-trump-is-not-required-to-register-as-a-sex-offender-fact-check/70217795007/

Now let's look at some real lying and corruption with all the bank records and copies of cheques now in the public domain.

Yes it's the lifting of the stone that the Biden Crime Family has been hiding under and look what slithered out !

"Joe Biden received $40,000 in laundered China money from the account of his brother, James Biden, and his sister-in-law, Sara Biden, in the form of a personal check (including an image of the cheque)

    https://oversight.house.gov/release/comer-reveals-how-joe-biden-received-laundered-china-money/

And that's just the tip of the Biden family chinese-dollar iceberg.

Why hasn't Biden been prosecuted, impeached, etc?

  18. Those of us who use MF may have noticed recently as I have. the disjointed and slightly odd forecasts of temperatures. Examples include the 7 day forecast not matching the daily forecast and the 15 day not agreeing with thre 7 day forecast.

There could be a reason for this:-

“Staff at Météo-France will go on strike this week, claiming ‘absurd mistakes’ are being accelerated by loss of human oversight”

“Since Nov 13, weather forecast data models have been crunched together via an algorithm and then directly sent to Météo-France’s internet site or mobile application.

The software that has led to the strike has predicted that the eastern city of Strasbourg will hit a baking 28C on Dec 9 despite it currently experiencing freezing temperatures”

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/12/04/algorithm-replaced-weather-forecasters-december-heatwave/

Before the time of storm Ciaran I started using ventusky.com and have found it very accurate as regards local actual and forecast  temperature.

You get temps, winds direction/strength, baro pressures for your location and loads more.

Meteo is basically not worth using a the moment.

Appoint a Power of Attorney. It can be you, your sister or a third party.  Once appointed, the POA is authorised to make legal financial decisions, ie not to the detriment of your mother, and an arrangement can be drawn up as to the ownership or disposal of the property.

My sister and I are sole beneficiaries to my mums house.

My mum has dementia and will probably have to go into a home soon. Not mentally well at all but could last many years.

But that leaves the house and what to do with it.

So the question is, can I buy out my sisters half of the house before my mum passes ?

I have no idea how things work in the UK.

It's not quite as simple now as how cajal describes it, it was before 2007 when I had an enduring power of attorney over my mother's affairs, the subject has now got much more complicated and has introduced the issue of mental capacity.

For information on POA's explained in plain language see this:-

     https://www.ageuk.org.uk/globalassets/age-uk/documents/information-guides/ageukig21_powers_of_attorney_inf.pdf

As you will see when you read it - you need to act now while your mother has mental capacity.

Getting a solicitor to assist is probably a good idea, particulary with buying your sister out of her share of the property.
