  1. I fell in like, certainly not in love. Our allowed budget is low in consideration of the region. My husband is 60 and age is supposedly one of the factors. We are also not subsidized for housing under his current job. We have been twice to look and although the place seems ok,there are issues. Even so, we think we have done the best we could do. The questions are more or less answered in that the gov't regulates. In the us one has to be aware of different types of interest banks are offering and be informed of latest variations. We all know where the housing market there went. There is already a notaire involved and realtor lives in neighborhood . Hoping this is good news and also the realtor and notaire have seemed on the ball, which is rather unique I think. I have no idea if we paid lowest price the owner would have accepted.
  2. Thanks for the input. It is a relief to hear this. ..will do a translator. No French skills i'm afraid.
  3. at home we have to be careful about real estate transactions but at least we know what to look for. on this side we do not know all the nuances and wondered if we ought to find a lawyer to make sure paperwork is in order.. or perhaps france is regulated to the point where there are no scams. interest is a tricky finance point at home.
  4. We are in "process" of buying but realtors work for seller. I feel rather unprotected in this process. Would any of you suggest hiring someone to represent or am I being overly paranoid?
  5. i have also seen vermont castings in and around brussels,we have one at home. the place we are moving has a soap stone bear already in place. i am sure it does the job but in choosing the house we will live in, i was "cheated" out of a fireplace. the godin had an enamel free standing with chimney out of the top. on the advice of another member i may have to rethink. i do not want to keep the bear however.. that one is gone. thanks again for comments..
  6. saves a lot of trouble! the site is a great resource for information it would otherwise take soo long to figure out. learning a new place every few years is wearing. thanks again
  7. my apologies. we do not live there yet and my bad for not using yellow pages in french, how silly. many thanks for the link.
  8. http://www.maisonsdumonde.com/UK/en/ these stores are all over FR ..good download to look and another alternative.
  9. I did try google and part of an old thread from here, minus the web suggested,..amazing how hard to find. many in us, uk, have manufacturer address and just wrote supra. one here in be. but not much help.would rather not ship! thanks for the input. any help much appreciated.
  10. Looking for closest retail place to evian les bains for godin stoves. Also, anyone recommend a carpeting store in area?
  11. I need to fall in love. After many expat years including moscow, there has been no real home. We have one love affair with 200 year old cape in us,lovingly, historically, restored but empty. We are now moving to Evian. We think we are sort of ok with place we have found. A lot on my list is missing but the place feels "good". A nice yard, though small but big enough to grow veggies. There is sun and that was a big one. I think after the terrible feeling of once again learning new surroundings and how to manage, I can love the little place.
