[quote user="DerekJ"]So now it looks like that although the UK stayed out of the Euro, the British taxpayer is still going to end up shelling out money to bail out the Irish mess. I never thought we had any money left but it seems we do!

''The EU rescue package, seen as “very likely” by European officials, could cost the British taxpayers as much as £7billion following a deal agreed by Alistair Darling when he was still chancellor in the political limbo following the general election in May.''

Does anyone think it a good idea to let the Irish economy go down the tubes given that the UK sells more to the Irish Republic than the combined total of its trade with several other countries such as China and the Irish Republic is one of the UK's largest customers?

I hadn't realised that countries are just like individuals:  you be profligate with no thought for getting into debt, enjoy yourself, have a wonderful time and, when it all goes pear shaped, someone comes along and bails you out.

Problem solved!
