NormanH
You heard it herehttp://www.completefrance.com/cs/forums/11/1396489/ShowPost.aspx#1396489(includes a link to version subtitled in English) Un Prophète has just won the Bafta award for best foreign filmhttp://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2010/feb/21/hurt-locker-avatar-baftas
cooperlola
It will surely win the best foreign film Oscar too, but why not at least a nomination for best film? It's an insult to suggest that Avatar is a better movie. Tosh in comparison, no matter how spectacular to look at..

Mr Coeur de Lion
Saw Shutter Island the other day, was quite good, although quite easy to work out what's going to happen.
NormanH
Well neither of my favourites (Un Prophète and Das weisse Band) got the Oscar for best foreign film!I have to say that from the trailer http://vivirlatino.com/2010/03/07/another-latin-american-oscar-contender-tonight-the-secret-of-her-eyes.php it looks as if the winner (El Secreto de sus Ojos) was selected because it appeals to the American sensibility, shamelessly using clichéd shots (the woman running along the platform after the train, etc) but will reserve judgement.. 5-element
Haven't seen Un Prophete yet!!!But just saw "Invictus" - pretty good, especially for rugby fans, and those who are interested in Nelson Mandela and South Africa, and if you like Morgan Freeman.http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/invictus/
cooperlola
Un Prophete was robbed.[:(]But so very glad Avatar didn't get best picture. Haven't see The Hurt Locker though - far too violent subject matter for me.Also delighted that one of my all-time favourite actors got an Oscar at last. Dude.[:)]

crossy67
Ok, now I have been pointed in the direction of this thread heres my few to start with.Into The Wild, true story about an privileged young American that becomes a tramp. Cinematic is not the word, stunning photography and a moving story with great Eddy Vedda (Pearl Jam) sound track.Schindlers List. No more needed to say really.Max Manus. Norwegian war film with subtitles, awesome film.Shooter was mentioned earlier, great film.Bank Job, again, great film.Loads of good films mentioned earlier, too many to mention. Is the Perigord film club still going? When I move over next year I will be bringing my projector over with me and may be setting it up in the cellar, could be some good film nights to get organised. Two more I would like to nominate as both old and new films are Inception and Grand Torino. I liked Inception because its a very clever film (as well as good effects), some might not get it the first time round. Surrogates was good as well. Mr Coeur de Lion
If you just want a total brain dead, action packed, humerous movie, I'd recomment Knight and Day. Very tongue in cheek, but fun all the same.Oh and I've just started watching a new zombie series, The Walking Dead. Very good, think we're up to episode 4 now. laroux
I would recommend death at a funeral but watch the original British version! I was a bit dubious a first and its quite a slow start like not very funny at the beginning but it is hilarious come the end. A classic British comedy - you can't go wrong! cooperlola
Tomorrow night 11.25 UK time 00.25 here - set your recorders for Frozen River on BBC2 or stay up. Melissa Leo was robbed of an Oscar. One of my favourite actors at her best.
