woolybanana
..... if the UK Union splits up, where will the different parts stand on the various EU treaties? Which country will 'inherit' these? Now, if I were a serious Eurosceptic, would I try to break upn the Union as it would force the resigning of the treaties, for which referendum on membership would be needed? Or is that too Machiavellic?
Pommier
I don't believe that Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland could be persuaded, cajoled or bribed into leaving the union, no matter how much England might wish it!
woolybanana
So, Alex Salmond is just so much wind then?
Pommier
Yep. He knows that the Scots wouldn't vote to leave the union in a referendum so he can talk about it as if it was possible.
idun
I heard it said that they would be the most acrimonious of divorces if that happened. Why not the whole hog, we'll have a free Basque state, a free Breton State, we could get all the old borders from a few hundred years ago and have done with it. What interesting times we live in. Hoddy
Not particularly, but better than they were after 1066. It's just that if we're thinking about now I think some regions could do better on their own.Hoddy
idun
Yes, pre 1066 would probably be best really, apart from the Viking raiders.
