Calling HMRC

Norman, my  0845 numbers are free with my telephone contract. So I don't pay.

Even though these are 'free' numbers for me now, I often go to 'say no to 0870' and then go to 'search for an alternative number'. Then you have a choice of typing in the 0845 number or in this case typing in HMRC. There is often an alternative, that is a basic land line number.

[quote user="NormanH"]THIS is why my phone bill went up last year! Normally I have free calls to UK landlines but....

Norman try this website, as Idun says they give  geographical land line numbers. The last time I called HMRC I used this number,                              0044 135 535 9022                          and asked to be put through to the department I needed to speak to, it worked for me.
