taxes fonciers/d"habitation yes again

We have just returned from our house in 03 and thought our taxes would be waiting for us to pay alas not.Our Marie was away on holiday so could not ask.We payed the remainder of 2005 at the Notaire office, as we bought the proprty in july.As i am in the early stages of learning french any advice or info would be much appreciated.We will not be able to return to france till late december so its a fine or prison?

From the beginning, on the 1st of January, the person who is in the property has to pay the Taxe d'Habitation for that year.

The person who owns the place on the 1st of January has to pay the Taxe Fonciere for that year.

 

No one else owes this money. That person(s) owe the taxe officials.

 

However, when selling and buying it is 'usual' for the purchaser to pay the seller from the date they take over the property. The notaire will often sort this out and it should be noted in the agreements that this is going to happen. The payments are usually worked out in the number of days left for the year.

 

And as I said the bills are issued in autumn for that year. Although the notaires would be able to make this calculation in say July and get the buyer to pay for the number of days left that year.
