Picnic Spot In The Pyrenees

Recommended Posts

Could anybody recomend a senic picnic spot in the pyrnees?

We are travelling down from the Vendee in late may with my elderly outlaws (inlaws) to stay for a couple of nights at a B&B in Buzy. We would like to take them up in the mountains but they are not able to walk any distance. We wanted to take them on the "Le Petit Train D'Artouste" but it opens a week later.

Many thanks

If you can beg, borrow or buy a copy of the guide book 'Gascony and the

Pyrenees' by Facaros and Pauls (in the Cadogan Guidebook series and

currently available from Amazon.co.uk for £8.57 with a 24-hr turnround)

I think you would find it an excellent investment.  It is very

entertaining and informative - lots of suggestions for things to do and

visit, some of them quite original.   For example, Maison

d'Ossau in Arudy (which is the centre of the Pyrenean marble trade) is

a restored 17C house which has exhibits on the nature, traditions and

historical background of the area. Buzy isn't specifically mentioned

but it is is just down the road from Arudy.  It is a shame about

the little train of Artouste not being open as it used to run all year

round.  I know last year we had a picnic beside a lake, somewhere

near the Lac de Fabrèges.  I think it was probably the Lac de

Bious-Artgues, south west of Gabas; I remember it was reached by a

fairly decent road and there was a large car park and space for picnics

(though I don't think there were any loos - worth stopping in Gabas or

at the tourist development at Lac de Fabrèges beforehand, perhaps, if

you have elderly passengers).    If you carry on south

from Gabas for a few miles you cross the border into Spain which looks

remarkably like the bit of France you have just come from! However, if

you want to stock up on things which are cheaper there (including

booze, pottery and leather goods) you can drive on to one of the small

towns nearby (I don't have a map of Spain handy so can't suggest

specifically where).  At the time you are going, the Pyrenees

should be looking lovely with snow capped summits and lots of wild

flowers - I hope you all have a great time!
