Shops please!

Hi,

New to 87 and visiting in a few weeks but dont have the time to wander about...

Can anyone recommend any builders merchants and white goods shops around Chalus/Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche area

Or any other shops to recommend? [:)]

Two builders merchants, an electrical shop, and an ironmonger in Chalus itself, together with the usual selection of other shops.

We went to Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche for the first time last week and we were so disappointed. It is les than a one horse town. We arrived at lunch time with the in laws. One cafe was closed , the second closed at 1:30 and although the town has a look of a market town (i.e. wide main street etc )there was nothing there. I hope we have missed something and there is some sort of life

St. Yrieix la Perche has a Weldom and a Mr Bricolage. White goods shops include a Pulsar, another shop opposite, next to the Tourist Office sells white goods too, but I can't remember the name off hand and a third one  near the plan d'eau called Lighthouse. Both the Casino and Intermarche supermarkets have been extended and have white goods departments. There is a very good market on some Fridays which takes place behind the main road, selling a variety of goods and local produce. There are several reasonable places to eat, the nicest being Le Cheval Blanc. Daisymay, you may have come on a Monday when nearly everything is closed, do  give it a second chance some time you might change your opinion.

Oh St Yrieix is not that bad you know !

Apart from the shops etc that have been recommended already, there are also a couple of other builders merchants (other than Lavaud / Weldon) which I haven't actually used, so can't comment on.    Just outside of St Yrieix there is also a sort of 'quarry' place, is all I can think of to describe it, which sells all kinds of sand and gravel etc, and there is also a place which sells all kinds of stones.

We have found the staff in ets Lavaud to be really helpful since we have been here; once or twice we have baulked at the price of things (once showing them a printout from Lapeyre for a large number of velux windows and accessories which we were trying to price to buy) and although they couldn't get the window price down, they actually spoke to boss man and offered us a better price for the blinds and window surrounds than lapeyre, so it's always worth having a chat with them.   I should point out that we didn't actually go there with intention of showing them the Lapeyre price and bargaining, it was simply a matter of having a record of what we wanted handily printed out.   A couple of the staff speak adequate English also if required.   We have a tendency to the bizarre situation where I speak to them in fairly rubbish French, and they then sometimes, if in the mood, respond in fairly rubbish English (very strange !).

oh me again, DaisyMay, not sure there is life as such in St Yrieix, but there is a fairly good cultural centre, and there is a 'pub' which stays open late at weekends, albeit it is hardly 'rocking'.

I'm looking to pick up some hard-core to fill in a parking space so that it stops turning into a quagmire every winter.  Does anyone know where I can get some near to Oradour-sur-Vayres? 

Also - old railway sleepers to make some steps?

Pea-gravel for the parking and the steps?

Paving slabs to lay infront of a front door?

If you go to www.pagesjaunes.fr and enter MATERIAUX DE CONSTRUCTION and your location you should get a list of builders merchant type businesses in the area. It's unlikely they will sell hardcore (unless you want to buy stone or gravel new) but they can probably point you in the right direction for it.
