  1. We have recently been told that it is illegal in France to leave our dog in the car whilst we pop into the supemarket. We usually leave her with a couple of windows open and would not consider doing it if it was hot unless the car was in the shade and she had some water. Does anyone know whether this is true?
  2. We are considering a two centre holiday next year, spending some time at our cottage in North Dordogne and a week or so with a sailing group in Annecy. Does anyone know where we might hire a touring caravan somewhere between Limoges and Annecy?  We already have a tow hook and electrics ( Euro pin and adaptor for UK ). Touring caravan rental does not seem to me very common in France or perhaps my French isn't good enough to the use google.fr search engine. as I keep coming up with static caravan parks. Can anyone help? John.
  3. I have a Crossman Skanaker .177 CO2 target air pistol which I use for target shooting.  This used to be held on my firearm certificate, but since the law changes when pistols were banned in the UK this is no longer a firearm that has to be registered. Air pistols do not seem to be covered in any of the French categories either as having to be registered or licenced. Would I therefore be able to bring this pistol in and out of France/England without formality.  I suppose I would have to declare it at security as a dangerous item on the ferry! Has anyone any experience of this?
  4. Dear Sweet We stayed in the Ibis in Abbeville. It is just off the A16. They were quite happy to accept our cross-collie for 5 euros extra and allowed her in the lounge and dining areas as well as the bedroom. There are reasonable grounds for doggy-walking too. There is a very good restaurant just up the road (we didn't fancy the Ibis menu) where the dog was also welcome, which you pass on the way to the hotel -located on the left as you drive into Abbeville in a shared drive with a clinic and Formula 1 hotel, just before the shopping Geant, a good place to fill up before hitting the ferry/tunnel. 5. Nick Thanks for your post concerning our absentee neighbour. We have checked our insurance and have indeed got "protection juridique" and will be contacting the insurance company, if we can verify any problems due to negligence by her.
  6. Our holiday home is semi-detached to an empty property. When we bought it, the Notaire assured us that the owner was obliged to maintain the property so it would not affect ours. The house is owned by a lady who is a care assistant and was left this property, along with others we gather, by the old lady living there. We were offered this property so we went to have a look. As she wanted a cash sale, we lost interest. It is in a 1950's timewarp ( judging by the state of the kitchen). An internal wall has fallen down due to a leak in a bathroom. It is totally uninhabitable. Our builder said it would need at least £160,000 spending on it, even the floorboards are rotten. A friend who keeps an eye on our property saw a 'manitou' in the garden the othr day and 'hearsay' has it that the staircase has fallen down. We cannot monitor the party wall as our side has been lined with plasterboard and polystyrene and covered in lovely crepi paint. However, the skirting board in the front room is rotting and needs to be replaced. I am just worried that this is indicative of an underlying problem that cannot be seen. What rights do we have and what can we do?
  7. St. Yrieix la Perche has a Weldom and a Mr Bricolage. White goods shops include a Pulsar, another shop opposite, next to the Tourist Office sells white goods too, but I can't remember the name off hand and a third one  near the plan d'eau called Lighthouse. Both the Casino and Intermarche supermarkets have been extended and have white goods departments. There is a very good market on some Fridays which takes place behind the main road, selling a variety of goods and local produce. There are several reasonable places to eat, the nicest being Le Cheval Blanc. Daisymay, you may have come on a Monday when nearly everything is closed, do  give it a second chance some time you might change your opinion.
  8. Hello Afy, I used to reload in large quantities in those halcyon days before the pirates relieved us of our pistols.  As you can tell from this I still live in the UK and only have a holliday cottage in the Dordogne. There isn't a lot to reloading once you have  purchased your equipment.  You need a press (progressive if you can afford it and load a lot), a set of dies and shell holder for each caliber you are going to reload,  a powder measure (tea caddy type is best, get a good one), and a set of powder scales. A good shooting magazine will provide you with the names of the major manufactures of equipment and they will probably have web sites. The reloading companies usually will send out loading information if you ask them. The real important part of re-loading is, safety, care and careful measurement.  It is not a job to be rushed or taken lightly.  A carelessly loaded round whether with too much or too little powder can be dangerous but this is usually only a problem when cases are double loaded in error. small weighing differences may cause inaccuracy but is unlikely to be dangerous. Getting the right load for your gun is a metter of trial and error and you need to make small test batches and record all your results until you get the right load.  Target shooting loads are usually lower than the factory recommended loads as reduced recoil is an advantage. Please be aware that I am totally ignorant on French firearm legislation so I have no idea if you would be contravening the law by reloading.  If you are a member of a shooting club I think the best thing would be to ask other club members for advice. I would be interested to know what type of target shooting you do and how you found shooting targets in France compares with your experience in England as I hope to emigrate in due course and will probably take up pistol shooting again. John
  9. We bought a holiday cottage in Jumilhac Le Grand just over two years ago and love coming out to recharge the batteries. Through caravanning in various locations in France, we fell in love with the countryside, the food, the chateaux and the weather! We had planned to move out permanently this year, but have had to change our plans for family reasons. We will get there eventually. We come as often as possible and would very much like to meet anyone else from the forum in the vicinity. Caroline
  10. Cathy - I was very interested in your post.  Caroline and I are planning to move to France as soon as we can get a buyer for our house and we are thinking of the Medoc as our first choice.  Do you enjoy life there despite (or maybe because of) the absence of fellow Brits. Looking at Wanadoo Meteo, it seems to be hotter in Manchester than on the Gironde at the moment, I hope this is just a temporary blip. John and Caroline
  11. Hello Pool Guy, My wife and I are hoping to move to France as soon as we can sell up in England.  We may need to install a pool as we wish to run either a gite complex or a chambre d'hote. I have been reading up about pool treatment methods and the environmental impact of the salt/chlorine systems.  I have also been reading American and Australian sites which appear to be offering natural water pools without salt or chlorine.  These seem to offer a far better solution but I have read a couple of threads suggesting that these are not acceptable to the French health authorities, and I haven't seen any such systems on French web sites.  Perhaps you would no if there is any likelihood of some changes in this direction. Also I am trying to put together some budgets for a swimming pool say 15 x 10 with adequate security and wonder what sort of ball park figure I need to provide.  I know its a bit of how long is a piece of string, but I don't want the finest pool in France neither do I want the cheapest rubbish on the market that will give endless problems. Any advice would be welcome. We are currently favouring the northern Medoc region but things can change. John
