I didn't think Quillan is that bad. I admit we haven't visited it, but we often drive through that way en route to Spain, following the Aude valley up into the mountains.

The countryside is pleasant and the gorges are spectacular, although we probably wouldn't swap our town, on the rural northern fringe of the Agglo de Carcassonne, for Quillan.

I have to admit the Aude valley on route to Perpignan or Andorra is geologically spectacular but its the poor decrepit villages on route most houses and shops are in decay

I did enjoy visits to Carcassonne out of season
