Christine Animal
Is it a lucky or unlucky day?Today, south Deux-Sèvres, it has been a wonderful Spring day and the dogs have been back out sunbathing. I know it will not last, but as the French say "c'est déjà ça de pris". I shall remember Friday 13th January 2006 as a lovely sunny day. How about you, how was your vendredi 13? Patf
According to the local paper the saying for today is " Soleil etchaleur a la St Hilaire n'indiquent pas la fin de l'hiver". So don'tput the winter woollies away yet. Pat.
Went into the file labelled "Good Days" (as most do, frankly: Ican't be doing with too many Bad Days, but then I am generally cheerfulto the point of being deeply annoying). We aired out a couple of theproperties and started the annual maintenace cycle, which is alwaysoddly satisfying whatever horrors we might find. Lunch was perfect andaround about 4pm we slopped off for a beer before picking up the childrenfrom school. A friend came over last night and told us that the Frenchin general regard Friday 13th as being a lucky day. I think that Iwould tend to agree. Iceni
But why is Friday 13th considered to be unlucky ? And by whom - other than some Brits ?Did the Ides of March fall on that day ?Or is it some mythical christian thing ?I have started Googling but no sensible answers yet - so thought of asking you lot.Johnnot
Alexis
Well, I didn't win Euro Millions or the Super Loto so looks like Friday the 20th will be my lucky day...when I DO win Euro Millions!!It said on the telly that sales of scratch cards, games of chance, betting etc, increases by 20-25% on a Friday 13th. DPJ
Those that know me have probably got fed up over the years of me saying that Friday 13th is my lucky day...Mind you, my £7.90 win on the EuroLottery last night wasn't exactly what I had in mind................. Furry Knickers
I had a bricklayer in bricking up a door way, and he went and used me 10 litre container of Lourdes holy water to mix his mortar! I shall have to get back there quickly to get another supply in.

And by whom - other than some Brits
On Friday the 13th of October 1307 the French King Phillip the Fair (or unfair depending on your point of view) sent troops to arrest all the Knights Templar in France and to seize thier assets as he was a bit short of cash and the KT's were wealthy and immune from taxes by papal decree.Since then Friday the 13th has been traditionally regarded as unlucky, particularly if you were a Knight Templar and living in France! If you're not then you should be OK.Cheminot

Some years ago I was arranging a big dinnerfor various business associates and mentioned to a Russian colleaguethat we needed another body as a table for 13 was about to happen. Helooked at me as though I were mad, so I explained the above and he saidsomething along the lines of "how could a series of events that abouthalf of humanity consider to be the salvation of mankind be unlucky??"I believe that the Savoy or Ritz (can't remember which) keep a stuffedanimal on hand to make up any tables of 13 to 14. I can't remember whatit is called, though it has a name.
