Travelling to Bordeaux

This is not a travelling to/from france query but wasn't sure where else to post.  I am hoping to travel to Bordeaux from St George de Didonne by train and I assuming the quickest way would be to get to Santes and I could pick up a train from there.  Unfortunately I will be on public transport, probably bus to Royan and then train to Santes.  I am thinking of staying overnight in Bordeaux and coming back the next day.

Can anyone come up with a quicker or less complicated route?
