Christine Animal
We found this in the house last night hanging under a table with part of its wings sticking out and wondered what it was at first, it was so big. It's probably difficult to tell from the photos (except against the scrumpled kitchen paper I got it on to), but it was about two or three times the size of a normal butterfly or moth, with the wing span of a small bird.I bet you'll know what it is Chris. Christine Animal
Thank you both, it definitely looks like yours JayJay, ours was bigger than the one on the hand below from this site. But I just saw on another site that they can have a wing span of up to 6 ins."large brown moth with eye markings: a mottled-brown moth with an oval like an eye on each wing and a wingspan that can reach 15 cm (6 in.) Native to: Europe. Latin name Saturnia pyri." http://www.schwalbenschwanz.ch/English/Moths/GiantPeacock/GiantPeacock.htm Thank you for finding it. chris pp
It seems to be a moth that is increasing its range and numbers, more climate change?? They are on the wing at the moment and can easily be mistaken for a bat in the dark or poor light.Link for you Christine (or anyone else of course). http://www.papillon-poitou-charentes.org/?E=403Chris
