Volunteering in Lyon

Hi, am going to be in Lyon from 1st of Sept for a year to study and was wondering if I could volunteer at a community center / homeless shelter / a foundation there just for couple of hours a week.

I had a bad experience with dogs and cats since my siblings were bitten and scratched by a dog and a cat respectively and I saw both events when I was little, so I haven't been comfortable with dogs and cats. So a friend suggested maybe I can volunteer in an animal shelter to overcome that fear.

Any suggestions are definitely welcome.

Or better cause yet, perhaps in an orphanage or kitchen for the homeless or a community centre perhaps to teach English to teens etc.

Whereabouts in Lyon are you going to live and study?  It's really big here, which is why I ask before suggesting anything.

I am also interested in finding some volunteering for this summer in Lyon, I will be there for about a month July-August but I would be available to work full-time or during the day. I'll be staying about 15 minutes walk from Bellecour and have visted the city a few times before. I am interested particularly interested in Women's rights groups, domestic violence support, immigration or learning disabilities...but any advice or suggestions would be very welcome :) I am doing a degree in French and so have a reasonable level of language.

also a google search " benevoles Lyon " returned lots of links for specific associations looking for volunteers

I presume each Mairie will have a website and a list; if not, a visit to your local Mairie should produce a listing.

Hope you find something.  When I arrived in Lyon, I found the best thing was to buy  Le Progrès newspaper to find out what was happening around my area (I live in the 3rd) and I now do "soutien scolaire" for a local association as a volunteer.
