  1. I'm not an EU citizen btw, so does that affect the registration with ASSEDIC/ANPE? I just remembered that this is perhaps more of the employment service including the courses during unemployment for free in EU countries for EU citizens, is it not?
  2. Am in need to see one cause am having sore back recently. Am wondering also if a student's health insurance from LMDE or CMU would cover it? Or maybe I should apply to a private health insurance? Cheers for any info.
  3. Is a European MBA degree, well actually from a French business school, is only recognised in Europe (including UK)?
  4. I can translate from some Asian languages to English or vice versa, should I register myself as a freelance translator here in France by any chance?
  5. Thank  you! So first I should register myself with ASSEDIC/ANPE then contact IRFA for their French course? But what are these organisations actually?
  6. I was told by the univ. staff where I'm going to study in Lyon that for the application of carte de sejour, that I need to show I have a bank account in France. But I already asked say BNP Paribas that they need me to show the temporary carte de sejour to open a bank account with them. So this sounds like chicken and egg case... I was advised to show a bank draft on my application for carte de sejour, has anybody ever done that and the application went through?
  7. Oh dear, so Ecully is expensive? I was thinking to rent a small flat for myself up to 250 EUR/month maybe in a student residential area? I don't mind commuting to school in Ecully if the transport is within 30 min one way. Any websites I can check for student residence by any chance?
  8. Do you know if there is any volunteer/charity work in Lyon? I live in Ecully, but don't mind travelling especially on weekends. On weekdays I'm afraid I'll be in univ. till around 5pm.
  9. Hello, I'm moving to Lyon soon and would like to continue my French class. I heard there is a place that can teach French for free near Hotel de Ville but don't know what exactly the place. If anybody here knows a place with a reasonable fee too, I wouldn't mind it either. Cheers in advance.
  10. I also would like to have some info on health insurance at least till I can apply for the LMDE insurance as a student since I'm studying in France for a year. The kind of health insurance that can cover say consultation with a General Practitioner in a clinic is available for around 30 EUR/month I heard, so that should cover till I can get my temporary carte de sejour?
  11. Or better cause yet, perhaps in an orphanage or kitchen for the homeless or a community centre perhaps to teach English to teens etc.
  12. Hi, am going to be in Lyon from 1st of Sept for a year to study and was wondering if I could volunteer at a community center / homeless shelter / a foundation there just for couple of hours a week. I had a bad experience with dogs and cats since my siblings were bitten and scratched by a dog and a cat respectively and I saw both events when I was little, so I haven't been comfortable with dogs and cats. So a friend suggested maybe I can volunteer in an animal shelter to overcome that fear. Any suggestions are definitely welcome. Cheers.
  13. Hi, anybody knows cheap accomodation like youth hostel in Lyon? I don't mind staying in a dorm room sharing with other people since I'm in Lyon only for couple of days to look for a flat before moving there. Thanks for any recommendation!
  14. Is it enough for students to live on 900 Euros a month in Lyon? Rent would be 371 Euros a month that already includes electricities and gas (and water too I think, if it's charged). So the rest would go for food and leisure. The good thing is I can just walk to univ. cause it's very near. And there is another allowance for books and I can borrow a laptop so there won't be big expenses like that. Thansk for the input in advance!
  15. Do you know any space to rent to put stuff in Lyon with reasonable price? There is no furniture actually, so mainly books and clothes.
  16. What I was told by the embassy in Dublin is that yeah I have to give them a letter saying that I have a place a stay maybe in the university's dormitory or Crous' student residence.
  17. I must admit for me personally, I use emoticons to soften the tone of my writing in other forum I belonged to (now I don't write as much in any forum :( ). I don't use the "angry", basically the emoticons expressing negative emotions, that much at least. But it seems, some people consider emoticons as a rather stupid or silly way of expressing things. Kind of like showing a weakness or showing you're not that strong of a person who needs to soften the tone of your writing or who needs to make the other person comfortable to give a response to what you write. At least I got that kind of impression from some people, about showing a weakness part that is. Do you use emoticons and if you do, why or for what purpose? When you see one in somebody's post, does it make you feel you get a better picture cause the emotion is expressed there too? Or simply encourage you to write back cause it doesn't look so cold if the post is only text? Ever experienced a misunderstanding with another poster about interpreting the same emoticons?
  18. Hi, really thank you for the advice. Am trying to contact the Crous, first by email, but since no response for a week about by now, I have to build the courage to make a call. I'm just afraid nobody speaks English in the admin of Crous and my French is really bad, not par to make conversation yet. Ecully Cedex is where the campus is. Any more advice is much appreciated. Thanks again!
  19. Hi, am moving to Lyon from end of August to start my masters there and would like to rent a room in a shared house/flat or a flat for myself for 1 year. I'm living in Dublin now and won't be able to go to view the place myself till Aug, I want to start renting for a few months first with the possibility of extending it if I like the place, is it possible? Can rent up to 400 Euros, so where can I find ads for this kind of place? I tried the internet and actually found a site and wrote an email but no response so far and it's been a week about :( Heard from a friend who was arranging an event for the university that the suppliers in France she was contacting wouldn't deal with her by email so she would have to make phone calls instead, so would that be the case with my room/flat inquiry? Wouldn't mind getting a room in a student dorm or such either actually. How is the common practice here? One has to pay one-month deposit (which you get back when you move out, I hope?), agent fee if using an agent (up to 1 month too?) as the usual practice, I suppose? Any advice is very welcome. Cheers in advance.
