Should I use a Flocculant?

Being aware of Poolguys advice about keeping metals out of ones pool, I am interested to hear what people think about the use of Flocculants. In particular the Allum suphlate ones.

A neighbour swears by it for clarifying his pool, and in getting rid of the green algae dust that often settles on the bottom and corners.

My levels are spot on, I vacuum every other day, but still get the algae dust in the corners.

So, should I try a flocculant?

Many thanks.

I am not a specialist, but Mr Clair has just cleared a milky looking deposit at the bottom of the pool with floculant diluted in water, sprinkled over the pool surface from a watering can.

The faint milky looking deposit had resisted 10 days of filtering, including 2 backwashings of the filter.

He was able to hoover the "gelified blobs" (his technical term!) very quickly and cleanly.

floculant is for "suspended particles" in the water  - usually throughout the pool in milky cloudy fashion - sounds like you have some stubborn algae which will be banished by regualr vigourous brushing / chlorine /anti algue products.

If you add a flocculant you will surely clog the zeolite in

your filter thereby reducing its affectiveness as you have 1 micron

which is the best you can get. Flocculant is only for those pool owners

who have sand in their filters (filtering at 40 micron and for some

reason do not want to change to zeolite)

If you are experiencing algea growths its down to pH and chlorine

levels not filtration rates. Time to change from salt the chlorine

direct. N'est par.

Andrew,

Thanks for that, I have not used a flocculant before, but am now glad I asked.

The algae growth is restricted to corners and the bottom edges, I am sure it is due to poor water circulation, all my levels are fine, but I am getting different chlorine levels in various parts of the pool. The zeolite is working well, only backwashing every 3 weeks.

Thanks for the help.
