Malaria tablets

We moved out to Deux-Sevres permanently in mid April (St Varent 79330) and have (luckily) not had to use any medical services. We have applied for our E106 but not yet received the paperwork as apparently it takes 4 months; we do have (presumably illegal) E111's.

We are travelling out to Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand in late August and have just learned that the area is malarial - does anyone know if we can obtain anti-malaria tablets from a pharmacy or do we need to go to see a doctor to get a prescription as in UK? Presumably we will have to pay whatever the price is as we are not actually ill?

Any advice would be welcome - does anyone know of an English speaking doctor in the Thouars/Bressuire area as my vocabulary would probably be a little stretched in this case!

Hi Sue,

We have a holiday home in Boussais not too far from you. While in the bank at Airvault we started chatting to a chap who spoke perfect English. He was very pleasant, turned out to be a doctor at Saint Loup Lamaire. He told us to contact him if ever we needed his services.Apparantly his surgery is by the railway crossing at St Loup. His name is Jacques Marteau, bd Voltaire 79600, St Loup. Tel 05 49 64 60 07.

Hope this is helpful
