It is a heel spur.

It is a small growth spur on the heel bone. It's sometimes called épine de Lenoir.

In most instances, the growth is 'accepted' by the surrounding tisue, but in some instances, it results in a small internal inflammation which causes a pressure pain when walking.

The most common treatment is by radiation treatment.

The area will be X-rayed first, the x-ray will be used to find the spur. A pinpoint mark will be made on the skin to help centralise the radiations. No more than one or two visits will be required. The treatment is very quick after the initial marking and the pain disappears in a few days.

(speaking from experience)
