unlocked mobile phones

Recommended Posts

Is there a particular phone you’re after?  Especially if you’re looking for an upmarket phone, buying a new unlocked phone “SIM free” is the most expensive way to buy it.

Any mobile phone shop should be able to sell you a phone SIM free.  You can get an idea of prices on Carphone Warehouse’s French website:   http://www.phonehouse.fr/commerce/servlet/frfr-server-PageServer?ARTICLE=TARIFF.OCTOBRE2005.TELEPHONESSEULS&NODE_ID=3092

It’s generally cheaper to buy a Pay As You Go phone and get it unlocked if you want to change SIMs.  Note Pay As You Go phones are usually customised by the networks – for example an O2 phone will briefly flash up the O2 logo when switched on, even after its been unlocked.  Some networks print their logos on the casing.  It’s easier to get some makes / models unlocked than others; Nokia’s are probably the easiest to get unlocked.

There are loads of new and used mobiles for sale on eBay.fr - you can enter the make and model you’re looking for in the search fields.

I know the question was about buying in France, but for those who are less restricted it is really much better to get phones in Britain. Look at the reconditioned SIM-free handsets at http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/commerce/servlet/gben-newclearance-Main?NODE_ID=5222&NODE_ID=8163, this one looks like a good deal http://www.carphonewarehouse.com/commerce/servlet/gben-newclearance-Details?itemID=MAIN.UK.INTERNET.CLEAR2.ITEMS.CLESET610.

Alternatively, get a Virgin phone in Britain. You may find it is SIM free (I have had two which were), if not, then as long as you have spent £30 on air time you can get it unlocked at no charge. There are rumours that Virgin may be coming to France.
