Would someone have a peak at their IP address and

Belkin router set up -:

Please,  Is your IP address 192.168.2.1/ ? What on your  Default gateway and DNS address all the same as IP address[8-)]?.  at present I have 10.0.0.138 on both of these but examples on internet show all these having same as IP address.

Then again I read that I should change my IP address to 192.168.1.1[8-)]

Before I stupidly went and swopped to XP (hoping to sort some issues ) all was working perfectly. I am now back with Vista but I get local connection but not internet connection.

I can get on internet through Belkin router using the tower but the laptop wont pick up the wireless. Would love to have last few weeks on internet before condemned laptop goes back to UK -

I wander off subject , but just to say re my big problem with buble gum laptop Dell, is still there anf I  have had one reply from PC World saying they might be the seller but its Dell that has the responsibility, so a friend spoke to UK Dell on my behalf they have checked tag details showing all problems over last 7 months they now say it will have to go back to Dell UK via daughter! they will collect only from UK address and if they cant fix it they will replace it - and here's me thinking we were in Europe![Www]

192.168.2.1 is from memory the default for Belkin routers. You can change it if you want but there is no point or advantage in doing so.

If the tower PC can connect to the Internet then there is nothing wrong with any IP addressing so you can stop worrying about that.

If you have got the Belkin wireless utility loaded then either uninstall it (you don't need it to make a wireless connection) or find out how disable it and use Windows Zero Configuration, should be a tick box somewhere.

Hello ErnieY

But the whole problem is it (the tower that has the Belkin hooked up to) is  not talking enough to the laptop , the laptop recognizes  the Belkin router  but not internet as well.

If the tower PC can connect to the Internet then there is nothing wrong with any IP addressing so you can stop worrying about that.

Why would I want to uninstall it from the tower ? I just need to check if all settings are accurate surely. For eg in  Belkin page

LAN> DHCP Client List

IP address is 192.168.2.2 Host name Vista Mac address 00-ID-09-c7-D3-39

IP adress is 192.168.2.3  Host name Tower Mac address 00-0B-DB-2F-4E-37

Another question - should any of these IP addresses me the same. I am asking if someone could compare with there settings if there are similarities.

Thank you

I think you're getting yourself in a pickle.

The IP addresses in the client list are perfectly OK but are just local addresses for your own network and nothing to do with the Internet side.

They may be called something different in the Belkin but your destination and/or gateway should be the IP address your ISP has assigned to you, I have no way of knowing what that might me but you can find out by going to http://www.whatismyip.com/

Your subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0 or similar, the last octet may be different.

For some reason I thought you were using a Belkin wireless adapter for the laptop which is why I said uninstall it's software but if that is not the case then forget that.

I reiteratre though the problem is NOT with IP addresses, if that were so then the laptop would not be talking to the router at all, nor would it appear in the client list. Your problem is simply one of wireless connectivity. Have you entered the security key which is a string of letters and numbers usually printed on the router label.

If you disable the wireless security then it should connect up regardless and at least you will know that is your problem.

NOTE: To get into the router you do not need the Belkin software just type 192.168.2.1 into your browser address box.

For some reason I thought you were using a Belkin wireless adapter for the laptop which is why I said uninstall it's software but if that is not the case then forget that.No just a router, laptop with own wireless card

Your problem is simply one of wireless connectivity. Have you entered the security key which is a string of letters and numbers usually printed on the router label.I kept it  in disabled mode

NOTE: To get into the router you do not need the Belkin software just type 192.168.2.1 into your browser address box.Exactly this is just what I did 191.168.2.1 in the address bar. I have also changed ports in the router in case it was dodgy.

The puzzle is that the set up as it is now was working perfect with Vista on laptop , then when XP was put on it went to pot, then I had Vist put back on , I had one day of perfect connection then lost it with only local connectivity on the laptop. Could something be blocking it on the laptop?
Brill, if I dont here on the contrary I have I think understood that on the laptop running Vista ( that simply is not seeing the internet) I do the above. It will have to be in the morning as I have gone numb I have been struggling since lunch time with this, any more idea would be very much appreciated.

Just been peaking at IP configuration on the towers XP and for the Belkin it says default gateway should be 192.168.2.1  (examples on internet say thats correct  it should be same as Belkin IP address , what do you think ) yet on the actual router Belkin Page  heading Internet settings its got default gateway  10.0.0.138 surely thats not correct.

Does sound odd, 10.0. addresses are also local like 192.168.'..........but if it works for the tower.............!

Have you tried a factory reset on the router BTW, there should be a tiny hole in the back to poke a paper clip or similar into.

I suppose I could alter that gateway address  to the same as the Belkin IP address as seen on other examples on the internet ( only just realized there are 2 kind of IP addresses personal that hooks up with e mails and eg Belkins which is 192.168.2.1 ( now I have just been told I should change it as 192.168.1.1 works better with Windows - any comment anyone , please.

I know the laptop wireless is not at fault because I have been sat outside a friends house tuned into her wireless  network and aquired 53 Windows updates !!

In WAN Connection type -Can someone please tell me what setting I am because I have a seperate broadband modem, then a seperate router. My options are Dynamic, Static .PPoE .PPTP . Why I ask is I had chosen Dynamic , yet no where has it asked me to put my wanadoo password or username in the Belkin router.Maybe not needed[:$] Any idea anyone?
