3103/147 not working for callers when Neuf Box switched off.

If you have a Neuf Box with your telephone connected to it maybe you would be so kind as to answer this one for me.When we are out and at night we have been turning off the computer and the Neuf Box but have been told by friends that our message service 3103/147 does not work. In other words they can only leave messages when the Neuf Box is switched on and plugged into the telephone line. Is this correct? Having lost several modems in thunder storms I prefer to turn it off and unplug it from the telephone socket when we are asleep or out. I don't like to leave equipment switched on in the house when we are not there especially when we are away on holiday! So far I have found no way of emailing a question to SFR.............................JR 

PS Questions put on the SFR forum have not resulted in any helpful response except one who suggested that this is normal, i;e. Neuf Box off and not connected then messages are not recorded on 3103/147.
