Utilities: The Next Challenge...

Recommended Posts

Hello,

We are on the home straight now...  Just a few weeks to go and then we will be decamping.  Trying to be as prepared as we can be for our arrival in Bussière-Badil (24) and wanted to ask about utilities.

Is there anything we can do with regard to electricity/mains gas/water/telephone from England before we move in?  I presume there are websites for the utilities companies - are they any use?

Assuming there isn't, and assuming that everything is disconnected (the house has been renovated but not lived in since July) how long does it take to get everything up and running and does anyone have any advice for the uninitiated?!

Many thanks, Alistair

If you bought your property via an agent, they will usually arrange the Utilities for you. Otherwise, you can try emailing the companies from their websites. I doubt that the water will have been turned off and EDF can supply both electricity and town gas (if available). For the telephone contact France Telecom at their local office nearest to you.

Good luck with your move.

You phone them, at least a week ahead of the day you are buying the property. Otherwise you may well find the electricity and water are cut off - this happened to the people who bought our last property as they didn't contact the utility companies in time. You should be able to get their numbers from their websites. You should be given your new telephone no. over the phone by FT - so long as there is a connection at the house.

On the day of buying your house - visit it first before signing at the Notaires to check all is OK and read the meters with the vendors, so everyone is clear, then phone those readings thru to the utility companies.

Don't forget also to put YOUR name on your mailbox as soon as you are there - if you don't, you may well find your mail being taken back to the Post Office. This happened to us.
