Caravan registration

I read somewhere that caravans owned by residents in France have to be "registered" for use in France but I can't seem to find the info now. We are thinking of buying a small caravan for the occasional trip and wondered what was involved. Does anyone have any info which would point us in the right direction? We are in the Creuse if that makes any difference.
