I can't speak for

other departements, but here there is a pot of money for roads in La creuse

(23) some of which is spent on 'D' roads and some of it is devolved to the

individual communes - along with their own funding, which they in turn use to maintain

their 'C' roads... or not.

The recent result was that our commune re-surfaced

our perfectly respectable chemin, to the standard as detailled earlier -

complete with the lethal gravel topping - while in the neighbouring commune

there is at least one road I know which is a pot-holed gravel track which is

further washed away by each storm. A few miles up the D1 you drive into the

(much richer) dept of Indre (36). You don't need a sign to tell you where the

departmental border is; the pinging of loosened fillings ricocheting round the

car is sign enough.

If only people would learn to share !
