Give yourself plenty of time so that if they discover and remove them then you'll have time for a coffee and a biscuit binge rather than hand them over - as you say passenger picnic! In WHSmiths (airside shop) Liverpool I was waiiting to pay for some magazines and saw packets of Mc Vities ginger nuts in the aisle alongside the checkout. It maybe the same in Luton.
