Types of planning permission

I have just scared myself rigid reading through this forum. I had no idea that French planning laws were so strict - covering even things like garden sheds. Last year I laid a patio in the garden next to a house wall and erected over that a pergola for plants to climb and provide shade. Is there any chance that these things would need some kind of planning permission or declaration? From reading the postings I have deduced that there seem to be two different kinds of permission: permis de construire and declaration de travaux. Is there anywhere, on this site or elsewhere that details which is needed and for what?

Thanks in advance.

Worried of Burgundy.

The best thing is usually to ask at the Mairie.
Your structure probably didn't need permission as it is attached to the house and is presumably on the same plot of land; some such structures are permitted without even a declaration when on the same plot as existing buildings and fulfil certain criteria to do with size, foundations etc.
A declaration is much simpler than planning permission.
The service publique site is very helpful on the subject.
