What is the best material for sound insulation?

Finally managed to get back onto the forum, it all looks very different now - very smart!

Can anyone advise me on the most efficient insulation material I can use for sound proofing? We have a new bathroom, with the soil pipe running down through the sitting room, so I now need to box in the pipes & insulate.

Castorama sell rolls of dense sound proofing material that we taped around a similar down pipe to yours to good effect. Is Interior Silent Travel still going in the UK? or is that a real blast from the past?  They used to sell the stuff that car makers stick on the inside of body panels to reduce noise.

larfarge make many different grades of plasterboard

and some of theese have a better decible rating than ordinary board.

the basic sound board i have used in the past was coloured blue.(used in the uk,,but sure this french firm would sell same in france)

You can pack around the pipe with rockwool fibre which you used to able to buy in blocks and rolls. I think its still available, but I wouldn't be sure who the distributors are in France. You can use it as it comes or tear off what you want.

Many thanks for your suggestions. I shall probably go for Rockwool and the most suitable plasterboard I can get. Rockwool's French web-site has given me the addresses of some local shops that stock it.
