we have granite walls in our french place(area 22)Upstairs is almost completed, but downstairs we would like to render some walls and retain the other walls just repointing between the granite stones. What is the best way to Render the walls leaving a rough type of finish?do we need to use a lime based mix?if so what type/quantities/ratio/method is best.Has anyone else done this,if so,did they encounter any problems.

Sorry for all the questions !

Many Thanks.Andrew & Jackie

Repointing stone walls - went to local Point P, Mme studied the colour chart, made her selection, PP identified type/colour of sand and colour of lime to give us the required result. At re-ordering time I took along a small sample of sand just to make sure. Do not throw away empty lime bag unless you have the lime type number imprinted on your body. Mixed in ratio of 3:1. Very pleased with end result.

Rendering - have not done any, just used plasterboard on metal over the unwanted stone walls.

It is simplicity itself to rough render a wall with lime.

Wet the wall. Throw the plaster at it.

Throwing the plaster ensures good adhesion and also fills any gaps in the stone/brick.

If that finish is a little too rough, you can smooth it out as you require or even then put a top coat on. If you do add another coat, don't forget to scratch the first coat before it sets.
