Starting work on new house

Hi all, I am a UK builder and I am about to start work turning a ruin into new house. I need to familiarise myself with materials and methods of construction used in the Charente Maritime region: can anyone recommend a book or offer advice on construction techniques? I have purchased 'Renovating & Maintaining Your French Home' and whilst being useful, the book is not technical enough. I specificately need to find out the steel reinforcing required in the foundation of the build.

I have found Leroy Merlin mega helpful in their 'Heavy side' dunno if you have one near you? Semmelles de fondation I think its called but they will have loads of literature there usually. Other thing when you are there look around..whatever they are stocking they are likely selling in that region..if you get my drift.

It's probably still not technical enough for your specific needs but we find the Oxford-Duden Pictorial French and English Dictionary to be a really useful book.  (ISBN 0-19-864538-4, RRP £18.99.)

My favourite remains  Construire ou renover sa maison

It is in French but is full of illustrations and tables. The only part which I think is out of date is the planning section where the forms have changed.

 

The Architects Pocket Book is also handy to have but obviously aimed at the UK.
