LangeHaas
See picture: http://oi46.tinypic.com/2lavmrk.jpgI would like to remove the cement and do the joints with lime/sand-mixture (like the rest of the house). Will the lime joints hold at this angle or will they wash away? Thanks
Théière
Lime cures slowly so you would have to protect it from the weather but once fully cured it would be ok. I could be tempted to continue the slates over the chimney albeit at a stepped level.
LangeHaas
Thanks for the reply. I thought about covering the wall with slates, but I think exposed stone makes more sense than slates, which would make it look like a problem area (which is isn't). just john
The answer to the problem may be a commonly used mix of 3/1 lime with the addition of a half of white cement, giving the appearance you like with a quicker firmer setting.

Cement forms a much harder substance which doesn't move at the same rate so the two pull apart allowing water to penetrate.Personally continuing the slate wouldn't look like a problem area but would be a neat and weatherproof solution. LangeHaas
Thanks for the artistic reply :)Agreed it does not look too strange, but it is defnitely more work than just redoing the joints... I will do that first and if it turns out to be a problem in a few years I will consider covering that part with slates.
