Strange formatting in quote above.....any ideas why?
You  need to move into "compatibility view". From the drop down tool bar (Page, Safety, Tools) press TOOLS then tick the compatibility view button. All will be good.

Ah yes, that's better!  Thanks very much[:D]

If in mailbox easier to spray.

Wait until the evening as they will return to the nest; earlier if the weather cooler.

Use any cheap household insecticide, volant ou rampant makes no difference, spray into slot of postbox for a 30 seconds.

Leave for a couple of hours and repeat process.

Next morning clean out box and remove nest.

Wear clothing to prevent stings but at night stray wasps returning to nest are rare.

Odd wasps may return to the nest for a couple of days after the eradication.
That's pretty much what I have done. WD40 all over the outside of the box seems to deter the returning strays from landing.

The oily texture means that it hangs around a lot longer than the insecticide
  3. I'm sure that wasps do have some environmental benefit, but in this case, they had to go because the postman was complaining about the proximity of the nest to the new postbox.

Pretty sure I've sorted it, having sealed up the letter slit with gaffer tape, then flooded the box with a melange of insecticide & WD40.

Hated to have to do that, but the last thing I need is La Poste pursuing us 'cos the postie had got badly stung.
  4. We've found a thriving wasp's nest in a disused lockup mailbox at our new house. I was surprised by the size of it when I opened the back of the box today.

They are largish wasps with trailing back legs whenthey fly, but I don't think they are hornets.

Any suggestions on how to get rid, please...........?

And the Mairie, it was our Mairie that had us and our neighbours over from day one.
I understand completely how you feel, but am not sure what you mean by the reference to the Mairie..........
  6. I think it is worth it in this instance. The chemin is the sole access to our house and the neighbour's use of it might escalate. At the moment, he seems to be using it on foot only, but the gateway now appears to be large enough for vehicles/machinery. There is the question of maintenance of the borders which will be damaged by frequent passge of vehicles.

There is also the possibilty of the chemin becoming obstructed by something parked outside the gate, which would give the absurd situation that we couldn't get to our own house over our own land.

I am keen not to allow the present situation become the thin end of the wedge.

If no vehicles are allowed, that takes away the majority of the concerns, so my inclination, if he cannot produce anything in writing (as he claims), is to offer a formally documented right of way on foot only.

If he wants to take a tractor into the field then he can take it through his own garden.

  7. Nothing in our paperwork and we received a message from previous owner to the effect that notaire "couldn't find anything previously." That was what started alarm bells ringing about this potentially being an existing long-running dispute.

The track is the only access to our house and is clearly defined as in our ownership for the entire 300m length. The supposed right of way runs over the first 100m only and is out of sight of our house.

What is annoying is the basic assumption that they can just trot along a neighbour's land, where they have clearly planted veg across what was the original access to the field from their own garden.

The hole in the hedge on our drive and wire gate looks suspiciously recent.....i.e. within the last few years.

What also bothers me is wear and tear on the chemin and lack of inclination to contribute (physically or financially) to upkeep of the same. I am not bringing that up until we establish the correct legal position, as that may open another can of worms, of course.

We certainly don't want to fall out with neighbours and everything is very amicable at the moment....they just choose to ignore our requests for a copy of the right of way.

Maybe a trip to the Mairie would be an idea?
  8. The owner of a house at the top of the track running down to our house has told us that he has a right away over part of the track to access a field at the end of his garden.  At various times he has told us that the previous owner of our house granted something in writing, but on another occasion that the right was given by an even earlier owner to this chaps' parents.

He has so far been unable to produce anything in writing to us and the people we bought from say that they have signed nothing.  However, reading between the lines, I think this is something that may have rumbled on for some time and which our vendor didn't make us aware of.

We are not thrilled by the assumption of the right of way, particularly as they could access the field through their own garden and probably did at some point in the past.

It seems to me that whatever the situation actually is, it needs to be formalised.......but I am not sure where to go from here.

    Any suggestions please?

  9. I'm aware a similar question was asked back in 2008, but has anyone recent experience of Bowen Therapy practitioners in France?  I have found a couple of websites, but was wondering whether there was any feedback out there........[:)]
  10. I put some PH plus in last night and the Phenol red reading is now 7.6.  DPD1 chlor test appears to be under 0.5 though.

In addition, I couldn't get DPD3 tabs locally, so I settled for an Aquacheck dip set.  Not ideal, I know, but these are the readings from that.....

    pH 7.2 - 7.8

    Free chlor 0 - 0.5

    total alk 40 - 80 ppm

    stabilizer 30 - 50 ppm

Not sure what best to do next......more javel?

  11.
Don't get too carried away you should have had closer to 6ppm after adding that much chlorine and if and I agree with chem geek you are showing combined chlorines at 2-3ppm then you need to shock the pool. i thought you meant the water was allowed to warm up in the kitchen before you tested it. Re reading your post I agree that test has been too long. Have you any DPD 3 test tablets?
Sorry for the confusion...no, I just left the sample, as taken, indoors for a couple of hours.  I haven't any DPD 3, but I'll try to get some tomorrow and also pH Plus.

Just done another DPD1 and phenol red test........1 - 1.5ppm chlor and 6.8 pH.  As it is quite warm, I thought the pool pH might have started to rise by now.  In the past, keeping it down has been more of a problem.  I'm wondering whether the low pH is affecting the efficiency of the javel, which was from a brand new bidon??

The pool is clear, blue and sparkling, but I certainly don't want a repeat of last years nightmare with algae.  I've got about 2 litres of javel, so could put that in this evening.......or do you think it better to try to wait until I can get the DPD 3 tabs and/or bring the pH up a bit?[8-)]

  12.
If you let the chlorine test sit, then there can be bleed-through of Combined Chlorine (CC) reading as Free Chlorine (FC) and there can be other reactions as well.  For the FC test you read it soon after mixing, but not more than one minute later.  I don't think the temperature affected the chlorine reading, but elapsed time probably did.

As for pH, it actually drops a little as temperature increases, but in your case I suspect that your Total Alkalinity (TA) may be on the high side and having the small sample sit exposed to the air had carbon dioxide outgassing increase the pH over time.
That was exactly what I was wondering, in my own very simplistic way.[Www]  I'll rely on the readings at the time they are taken from hereon.......Many thanks!

  13. Late opening our pool this year, but not in bad nick at all.........

However, a bit confused because using the simple DPD & phenol tabs with water straight from the pool, I am getting quite low readings.....0.5 ch and 6.8 pH.  The pool temp is 18C (always been a problem because shady site).  However, if I leave the test kit in the kitchen for a couple of hours, the readings increase to between 1 - 2 ch and 7.2 pH.

I put in about 3 litres of javel last night, expecting the ch to be higher this morning, but these are my results.......any thoughts please?

    (edit........pool about 45m3)

  14.
When I first started reading this thread back in january I hadnt heard of Jack Reacher -then i picked up number 13 from somewhere and realized who you were all talking about .
I got 1 & 2 from Amazon just before we returned to france and my daughter gave me 3,4 5 & 6 .  My OH has been sitting quietly for the last 2 weeks reading - chuckling occasionally
I expect he will finish number 6 tomorrow so then  I will be looking for another series for him to read .
Luckily on the Parc where we are we have a super English library so I do have some war type books lined up for him - but he has been totally spoilt by Jack Reacher
Quite right, there is no-one quite like Reacher!  There is a new book due August/September, so your hubby has just about time to catch up on the others beforehand.........[:D]

The trilogy by Tom Rob Smith starting with Child 44  is a fantastic read, Hubby and I couldnt put them down

Thanks, I'll add these to my reading list and look out for them.

Since staring this post, I have acquired the four books in the Camel Club series by David Baldacchi and looking forward to working my way through those in due course.  Someone also recommended the Lucas Davenport "Prey" series of novels by John Sandford.  The first in the series I think was published in 1989 and there has been roughly one a year since then, so 21 to date.

I bought the first three but couldn't warm to the "hero" at all in the first or second book, even though there is a splendid story line in each....graphic & gruesome!

However, there is an obvious evolution of the Davenport character in the third book, with an almost "Rebus-like" darker and more vulnerable side emerging.  Anyway, having enjoyed that book much more, I have taken the plunge and sourced the remaining 18 in the series[Www], so I think I am now well set for the next few months!

By the way, unlike Reacher, this is a series that needs to be read in sequence, starting with "Rules of Prey"

  16.
I use the diamond core bits for tiles.all the time and its the only way to go. Drilled un drillable tiles all the time to peoples amazement, I charge per hole! Run the drill very slowly, I use screw driver speed and plenty of water, I use a wet sponge to apply the water. Dont forget you can run the drill backward too as that extends the life because they cut in both directions.
Pleased to say that a diamond bit, plenty of water, slow speed, both directions worked prefectly.  Nevertheless, given how long it took me to get through each tile, I trust you are charging at least 15 euros per hole!!

  17.
Get a decent brush and learn to cut in [:P]
Thank you!  Unfortunately, now at that age where the eyesight lets me down with close work, no matter how steady the hand...........

By the way, many thanks on the tip on drilling the tiles......worked perfectly................cheers!!

  18. 50m roll of 50mm masking tape 7,20€ in local brico and I need 8 - 10 rolls for the entire house[+o(].  I could order from Amazon, pay the postage and still save 35€, but I was wondering whether anyone knew of a reasonably priced source in France.
  19. Oradour was every bit as poignant as it was before........glad to have revisited, as my wife and friends had never been before.  I'll always recommend it as somewhere to be seen, I don't think we'll be going back ourselves........

As to the food side of things, which was the original purpose of the post, we settled on the Lauryvan and, as there was a special occasion inolved, ate in the restaurant rather than the auberge.  Lovely location and splendid attentive service.  Food was very good, but our feeling this morning is that, for a gastro restaurant, it didn't quite hit the heights.

Thanks for all of the contributions.........[:D]
