  1. Hi

We arrived here 5 years ago with children aged 13, 10 and 8.   My eldest is now 18 and taking his French Bac S, Option International.  So his written english is at A Level standard.  He will return to University in the UK, but only as the career path he has chosen has a specific course there and not here.  Afterwards, well hopefully as a sports correspondent he will travel the world.   Many of his friends are french or international children who have lived in at least two countries, and I think that is where you find the difference children who have lived in more than one country will seek out work throughout the world, whereas many of his UK friends at University will then either return to their hometown to work or at least stay in the UK.  I guess what I am saying is we have spread their wings for them and opened up borders.

  2. Can anyone explain this.   I booked a flight with Ryanair in December for this February, 0.01€ to go 1.99€ return.   plus taxes amounting 40€,  I have now booked the same flight again for an additional passenger, the same flight prices BUT taxes amounting to 92€,  I thought these taxes were government taxes and should be the same?  The only offer I see showing on the site currently is the Buy one get one free, so its not that.

  3. Hi

Our adopted kitten from the refuge has now been with us for two weeks.  She is approx 9 weeks old, and very playful, eating well etc.  She is even cleaning herself now after a very smelly week!!    However,   although she will go the the litter tray to poo, she does not go there to wee.  In fact she will chose to wee on anything left of the floor,  ie school bags, shopping bags, clothes etc, if not avalable then just on th floor.   How do we train her to wee in the litter tray also.

    Lollie?

  4. Hi

Wee!   she was abandoned with her siblings at 4/5 weeks, left at the side of the road,  so she has been at the refuge in a cage with them for three weeks, and I have not seen her clean herself yet, so you might be right.  She is too small for us to wash, so we will put up with it and see how she goes!

  5. Hi

Picked up our new tiny kitten today, will post photo when have worked out how to!!  Questions,    she is tiny, around 7/8weeks old!!  Only our second kitten ever and Kitty was around 5 months when she arrived.    So firstly, she does smell a bit, well alot acually,  after being in the refuge, how do we get rid of the smell??    As she is so tiny we are restricting her to one room at the moment, with no electrics plugged in etc, daughter is feeling quite proud as she has just got her to use litter tray:: she is gonna be a clever one!!  but I am looking for advice on how to introduce her to he rest of the house and the dog.  and in what stages!!  Also when we are out and leave her should we keep her in her carrying cage?

  6. Hi,

When we first started holidaying in france travelling south we always stayed in Formula 1, with shower and tiolet at the end of each corridor. Those were the days!!  Recently we upgraded to Premier Classe,  en suite,  and have always had clean warm rooms,  the breaksfasts have been good too, choice of cereals etc.  The best so far, Beaune, the worst Perpignan.  But having two children we have always had to book two rooms, so might give B&B a try, thanks for the tip.

  7. Hi,

Yes once he has been offered a stage, the company complete the forms, the headmaster signs and you as parents sign.  A copy for each.   Then sometime during the week, a teacher will visit the place where he is working.  Your son will complete a daily diary and at the end the employer  will complete an assesment.

Here if they dont find anything they end up in the school canteen (no not on the plate!!!)   embarassing though!!

  8. Hi,

The children here do it  in 3eme  as every school locally is looking for the same week it is really difficult,  we start looking in Sept for December and they all say they have no places left.   4eme is even younger children so it would be difficult to get into restaurants etc as insurance is an issue.   We have found that most children get something through a family relative so ask around people you know.  It would be lovely to get into something you are interested in but realistically as is everywhere , its not what you know but who you know!    My son worked at the small local cinema where he learned to work the reels for the films, designed the following months programme etc,  so try small companies as they have more time to actually let the kids get involved.  But the experience of writing up a CV and letter of motivation is all good experience.

    Good Luck

  9. Kitty stll not come back, but we like to think she is out there having fun and will return one day.  However, my son says he cant wait for her to come back and is desparate for another kitten.   So we have been to the refuge and reserved a tiny kitten that was left at the side of the road last week with her brothers.   Once she has been vacinated and tatooed we can bring her home,   then we take her back later to be sterilised,   80€, a lot cheaper than when Kitty walked in and we paid individually for all of this to be done.  Are all refuge's the same regarding a complete service?

Hope this doen't sound too fickle, we just need another cat around.

  10. We live on the edge of town,  no holiday homes here really, neighbours down the road say a black cat is around and they have left out food, but they cant catch it.  I cant understand how one day she is happy to snuggle up all day on the bed, and the next live in the fields!!!

    Still we live in hope.

  11. Hi

As a small stray Kitty walked into our house just over a year ago.  We checked no one had lost her, then had her chipped and spayed and vacinated..  Unfortunately two weeks ago, almost year to date that she walked in she walked out!!!  Well we like to think she has gone back to her wild life rather than the other thought.

We have posted all the neighbours and have a notice is in the local boulangerie.  Many sightings but she has not returned.

Questions,   is it common for them to return to their former life.  Is it possible she could come back.   She was our first cat and we miss her.

We are keen to get another kitten, but is it too soon.  I dont think we would bother with a microchip in future but would certainly spay. What about injections, are they all necessary, considering how many live out in the wild without.

  12. My 13yr old daughter has a plaster cast for a foot injury and has been told she needs a course of blood thinning injections, Lovenox, to prevent DVT.  It seems to be the norm here in France, and maybe it is too elsewhere, but I am a little apprehensive, has anyone had there teenager go through this, I am not sure exactly what worries me, just a mum's worry. The nurse is coming tonight for her first one.

  13. Currently we have in the upstairs bedrooms, landing, shower room Atlantic F117 heaters, Its very rare we need to use them as the rest of the house is gas centrally heated.  But in the depths of winter sometimes the bedroom heaters are used,  its fine putting them on an hour before bedtime; but its difficult on a morning as we would like them to come on an hour before wake up call..  They cannot be used with a chronocard, at least reading instructions they all seem individual, is there anything we can use as a timer, or should we replace them.   Trying to kep costs down.  They are wall mounted.  Extending the gas heating is not an option, without replacing boiler etc.

  14. Has anyone booked group travel ie, a school trip, using one of the no frills airlines.    What were your experiences, how did you book it and who did you use??

I am looking to organise two trips for next year, and I would like to compare boat v plane.  I know the plane might not take off, but the boat was cancelled last October which left the school with an additional cost of 1000€ for changes of coach times and pick ups.

  15. Continuing with Ryanair,   I have a return flight booked for a long weekend, myself and my son.  Now my son will stay longer and will not return on the same flight as me.  What happens when I get to the airport and want to check just myself in?   Will they try to charge me anything for him not turning up?  Will they refuse me check in alone?  Anyone else been in this situation.?

  16. Hi

Having received notification of flight changes today,  East Midlands to Nantes now flying at 6.25am rather than lunchtime, I looked on the website and noticed they are now charging for airport checkin!! with the following rules.   I wonder what happens to people like myself who have already booked flights and have checked in luggage , do we pay now for checking in baggage and checking in ourselves, it would seem so.  Yes I know they are still cheap, but as online check n go is so restrictive in which passengers can use it, can they get away with it??
