Hi Richard,

I am currently on a French course in Saint Nazaire, run by CIFOR Ouest, 12hrs per week, gratuit,  The levels are FLE1-4, Francais Langue Etranger.   They also help with CV,s and arrange a session at ANPE to understand how it works.   Explained in a class one day was why people who spoke french fluently were attending the course,   lack of reading and writing skills, and to even be a cleaner here you must understand the labels on cleaning fluids!  So I guess from a safety level only,  a reasonable command both oral and written is required, apart from teaching English, of course.

2. Cheap flights are wonderful and how I wish we had them from near La Baule!  But beware of car parking fees.   Visiting the UK, Leeds/Bradford Airport via Jet2 at christmas, I was feeling pleased with myself on getting all the family there and back for 350 pounds, even though it was a five hour drive to Paris,   still better than the MI,   unfortunately on arriving at CDG they had closed all the long stay car parking, saying they were full, until further notice.   153 euros we paid for the week in the normal parking.  Hubby moaned all the way there,  fortunately it was not long after landing he was in the old local having a pint of bitter!!

Now which way shall we try next year???

3. After being in France for almost two years I decided it was time for my children to have their BCG jabs, aged 11 and 10.   The Doctor told me they no longer do or require you to have the bcg here in France, but you need a booster whooping cough jab as it is on the increase.  Anyone else with a similar experience.?

ps I have posted here in education as the bcg topic does seem to come up here the most.

4. Hi,

We moved here 18 months ago with children then aged 14, 10 and 9. They too had lessons in UK prior to our move and have continued with private lessons once a week here. Also there is an orgnaisation who works with schools helping non french speakers to learn the language, Here they visited my children for two hours each week for 9 months. Since then the schools have arranged additional help as they would with struggling french children, and the college has arranged for additional french rather than attending the english lessons. The organisation is CAREP, you can search this on their website.

5. On the 1st of Jan this year we were in rented accommodation and bought a property on the 15th April. This week we have had a letter from the previous owner, showing his copy tax Fonciere and asking for our part payment, as was written in the compris de vente. We also received this week our tax d'habitation for the property we were renting on the 1st Jan. This was all explained to us and in both rental and sale contracts. My understanding is that this is the norm.

6.
My glass is always half empty, my husband's half full. My reaction was the same as Lajamerie, Brittany having free rein to put their prices up even higher. However, my husband thinks it could leave ...
My friend received a phone call here in France today from Brittany Ferries saying her night crossing back here from Portsmouth to St Malo would not be running on Jan 2 and that it will be a day crossing instead!!!! She has changed to a night crossing to Caen, what is going on, no night crossings back to France after New Year weekend!!
7. Hi,

I have read everyones comments on this and we too get continual postings from Norton Anti virus stating we have this and the file name. Have tried deleting file but access denied. Hubby has stopped evryone using the computer now as worried that all our info is being extradited. I did a scan on the file but it came up clean. What exactly is this, and how can I stop the postings from Norton. The posting says, Unable to clean file, unable to quarantine file access denied; Does access denied mean Trojan was denied access or Norton was denied access to clean?? I am totally confused;

PS. Will have read all your info and will download, but will this help this current problem or future ones.

8. Grand Air College and Lycee in La Baule, It has an International class for each year group and has been running for about four years, it is a french state school so the students are taught the french cirrc. plus additional lessons in English, English Lang, Lit History and Geography, its free with a small contribution to the Int. Sec; around 30 euros per year last year so the best of all worlds really, my children are very happy there after 15 months and have fitted in better than we and the teachers expected.

9. I just gave the schools a copy of the record in their red health books. Incidentally neither the college or primaire here have commented on the fact my children have not had their TB jabs, even though my daughter has had her school health check with her red book shown to the nurse. I know it does seem to vary in different areas, we are in La Baule.

One tip, have plenty of passport size photos of each member of the family, and lots of copies of birth certificates, marriage certs. etc.

Good Luck,

10. Hi,

My brother in law has just returned back to the UK after a 2 week visit to us in La Baule. Whilst on holiday he had his dialysis 3 x per week at The dialysis Centre in Vannes. His comments were, very clean, very professional and very friendly people all round. He now has no worries about further visits.

Just thought I would post incase anyone has relatives wanting to visit but need dialysis.

11. Hi,

My sister, last summer after visiting me in La Baule went to Disneyland for a few nights on her way back to Calais - Dover. She is a spendthrift and her cheapest option was to drive to outskirts of Paris leaving here mid afternoon; and booking into a Formula 1 hotel near to the resort for two nights. Driving from the hotel to Disneyland was quick and easy, although they do charge for parking now! Also managed a day in Paris catching a train from very near to hotel; F1 are cheap and basic but serve the purpose; You do need to book them inadvance though;

12. We have just received our first form from CAF, hubby transferred to French office in April last year so have his salary in Euros April - Dec, but how do we show my salary in UK prior to move and his sterling salary prior to move;
We spoke to HR in the french office and they advise showing UK salary before Tax, then someone else said UK salary after tax! but do we convert to euros first?
Are we best leaving blank UK side and sending in copies of our payslips? Anyone else going thru same?

13. When my son visited Germany with school we got him a E111 from CPAM, although on a recent school trip to England, they were told at school that they did not need to get a E111 for the UK.

14. We moved to France April last year, my younger two went into CM1 and CM2 at a public school and my eldest into 5eme in a college public. The younger two receive help on a one to one basis for two hours each week with a teacher from the education dept who travels around the various schools helping non french speaking students in their schooling. As I did not understand why the college did not have the same system I looked further into what the dept was. Apparently CAREP is national so any children moving here and needing additional help may benefit from this as long as the schools are willing to participate; Although this is the website for Dept 44 there are other areas if you do a google search. Out of interest how are other children on this forum getting help in schools. Carep is only available in ecole public.

15. My children go to a state College/Lycee with an international section (British) in Western France. They are currently updating their website and have asked me what people in the UK would enter into a search engine to find this type of school.

They also have recently started up a German section.
