  1. You will notice on your tax forms there is a space for puting in any costs of materials for energy saving materials purchased during that tax year, ie on double glazed units 20% of the costs of the materials can be offset against your tax bill for that year.  Upgrading central heating systems is another.  Obviously an official receipt from an artisan is required as proof.

Other tax credits include paying for private tutors for your children in certain areas of education.

  2. Hi

My son who is the same age went to the local summer season job fair organised by the anpe, most of the companies there were surprised to see a 17yr old looking for work!  Generally these companies only have insurance to employ 18 yr olds plus;  Dont know if you have a local McDonalds, but they do let 16yrs work there during summer but restricted hours.

    Good Luck

  3. It seems our problem is that the new window is plain double glazed glass and all our other windows are old small squared glass, which it was out intention to change over the new few years, we have 15 of them, taking advange of the tax credits for enery saving double glazing.  Should we change our declaration to include all our windows, and how long do you get to complete the work?    Have spent all morning driving around our town, and there are loads of properties with mixed windows, so not very pleased at the mo!   for the very first time in three years.   The house is not particularly old, 1970, not in a preservation area and all the houses here are different styles, colours, etc.  No historique buildings within 800m.

It was the secretary at the marie who said we should not put our plans in as they are.   I am being optimistic and think she is trying to be helpful.

  4. Hi

We sent the form with photos of the front facade of the house together a technical drawing of how it will be with the doors, measurements, materials etc, it is literally taking out the old door and placing with glass door, no changes to size etc, they have asked for a drawing of before and after!  Interestingly enough they have not asked what we are converting  the garage inside to.   The garage is part of our sous sol.  I must admit I thought the declaration was so that our tax d'habitation would charge with the extra room.   We are not actually creating anymore floor space.

  5. Well I paid here 20 euros for the visit to the doctor for the prescription for the tester, he had some in stock so we just had to replace at our next visit, I think it was about 5 euros for the pharmicist, one prescription was sufficient for both my children, then later 20 euros for second visit and another 5 euros for the actual vacinne, which once again was sufficient for both children,  around 50 euros altogether, all was refunded by CPAM and our mutuelle,  I guess if you have just arrived, keep your receipts until you are affiliated into the system then you willl get at least 70% back.

Beware of swimming after the vacinnes though, it took over four months for my sons to heal,as he had swimming lessons each week.

  6. What is the basic difference between Declaration de travaux and Permis de construire,   when we phoned the Marie to ask what we need to do to change the intergrated garage door to a patio door, we were told we did not need permission but need to complete a declaration, which we have done with all necessary drawings and photos, but they keep asking for further things, can a Declaration be refused???  I thought we were just informing them of what we are doing and would get taxed accordingly!

  7. Yes, I spoke to my offshore bank this week who confirmed its the day the interest is paid into your account that is used.  is generally  end of March; therefore for 2005 it would be the interest paid that date, assuming you have an yearly interest paying account..
  8. Not sure where you are but Breizh Mobile seem reasonable for mobicarte,  you buy mainly online.   We bought a phone and pre pay from Virgin UK very cheap which whoever is visiting uk takes with them, after 30 pounds of calls they deblock free, so now we use a Breizh sim card here and the virgin when on holiday all with the same phone.!    Briezh do a mini forfait for just 9.90 euros which is perfect for teenagers just starting out!!

Having said all this, I have just discovered Breizh and just ordered a prepay card for 9.90 euros to start and see how receptions bear up. If okay then the kids will just have to say goodbye to Orange!!

My husband has a visa debit card from CA.   He travels alot and books his flights on line, but whenever he clicks as payment by visa debit card it refuses transaction until he clicks visa credit card when he can continue at a larger charge!   Ryanair insists its the banks fault and the bank insist it is a debit card only,   anyone else having the same problem or have any answers??

  12. I recently has a quote from the above mentioned brokers for a ridiculous amount of money and in there terms and conditions it states that

    Validity of Advice

Whilst our advice will be up-to-date in relation to the overseas published tax laws at 1st January 2005, we may not necessarily be up-to-date with any legal cases or practice in the foreign country as this can take a while to filter down to us, whereas in relation to UK tax we are fully up-to date on these matters.

I wouldnt expect them to wait until it filters down for that amount!!!!

I spoke to a young man at CA Britline who explained Assurance Vie to me in full and you need to be resident here and tax payer I believe??   Well he said he wouldnot have had the conversation regarding these tax savings accounts if we were not but he did explain several..   They are hoping to offer these to customers once the english paperwork has been signed off by there solicitors, so maybe worth a call if only for clarification in English!!  >Of course they are already available through CA and other banks etc.

  13. Here in La Baule the Marie spray the pine trees each year, but we still had over twenty nests in each tree this year!    Unaware of what they did, last year we tried to shovel them up!!!!   Only to end up with an horrendous rash around my neck for almost three weeks!  The doc knew straight away what it was.   You are not supposed to shoot the nests, but many french people do but that is only effective during really cold weather.   This year we paid a company to come along and cut them all down.  Its the only safe way and ensures over a period of years that there will be less and less.

Starting to itch just thinking of them!!!

  14. Hi

Where are you moving to Kathy?      If you are near one the the french state schools with an international section, you may be helpful to them. These students have been studying  an extra 6-9 hours of  English since 6eme. and could be looking anywhere inside and outside of france.  My son is in seconde and will return to Uk for university studies, many of his friends parents, french, have asked me where they can look for information regarding courses and universities, and how the system works.

  15. Hi,

A friend has kindly offered to have the kids for our first weekend away alone in 20 years!!!   Thinking of driving to the Bordeaux region for a wine tasting weekend,  to organise ourselves rather than a package,  any suggestions of where to stay and visit.

I have noted Cathys comments re the Medoc Chateau.
