Of course I knew... Does not mean I like it.... and I think it should be exposed as its becoming common practice when a bread and butter job ( such as cam belt change for example ) even in little garages means ...That a turn to a computer is needed to provide what is likely to be an inflated price.

.

2. Well.... its got you all looking at what we have to pay for garage services and how its charged .

To those who think its OK to run a garage in this way

I take it you are quite happy to pay . Personally when I see a guy look at a computer and tell me his one mechanic at say £50 an hour is going to take 4 hours to do the work on my car knowing at the time he is going to do it 2. At that moment he is ripping me off for a hundred quid .. In fact planning to steal from me.
3. Dave wrote : Th fact that they never charge you less if the job takes less actual time but will happily charge you an extra hour if some bolts were seized or similar is just a symptom of the garage industry - nobody is accountable for total hours worked regarding declared profits and taxes etc, its all just "income" and the actual number of hours worked compared to the number of hours charged doesnt enter the equation anywhere.

Sounds like the garage industry is working a huge rip off here .The mechanics for a start if they are not putting in the hours worked but signing off on invoices showing that they had would be joining the boss in false accounting ... It would be child's play to check the hours they were paid for each week along with the hours the boss had down for them working on customer invoices . It seems like if you find a garage with an HONEST owner you are going to be lucky .
4. Recently had work done on the car .

This must happen to thousands every day ..

The job looked up on a computer. Customer told "computer say's 3 hours and shows what has to be done " .You are told cost of parts cost of labor at 3 hours plus vat is £XXX that's what its going to cost you .

You may then find your car is outside the garage after say one and a half hours waiting for you to turn up for it ... or after you get the car back you see the clock has stopped for no where near 3 hours .

Now imagine the mechanic clocks on at 9 am clocks off at 5 pm takes his hour for lunch and fits in 4 similar jobs . He signs the jobs off thus showing on paper he has done a 12 hour day working on cars .After all .... that's what the customers have paid for . Say this happens every day. There is a paper trail showing hundreds of hours worked ..... that have not been.... and hundreds of pounds raked in for these hours not worked from customers .....

Who gets arrested here ? .....Because it seems like a crime to me ...I should think not only the garage owner has a "Please explain " the mechanic who is

signing the work off as well ....And if a son of mine was the mechanic I would not be happy this way of working was practiced . .

5. We have known for some time about the ferries having to change to using a cleaner burning fuel and the cost will be passed on .With P&O it appears a family of four will find a Dover / Calais return go from £160 to £210 next year I can understand the need to reduce sulphur emissions to give us cleaner air......but

What I don't understand is if the EU wants to go down this road to keep us healthy....Why permit Germany who is cutting back on Nuclear power to extract huge amounts of dirtier to burn brown coal from new mines to burn in new power stations ?
6. Whats the price of the big one in Luxembourg then ?

My wife bought the small one at just over £2 pounds in Boots ..

The large one in the chemist was £4.60 and it was the large size we could have got for 99p ..so I am still spitting feathers over not going into the 99p shop first !
7. Mellor has just about done down on his knees to beg forgiveness for his booze fueled rant at the cab driver..He has vowed to stick to water in future at dinners . Make a donation to a Cab Charity and short of going round the cab ranks with a bucket and a sponge offering to wash the windows on every black cab he cant say sorry enough ..... Next time he raises his hand ...He will now probably get a cab !
8. Bottom line is the PC was right all along...

Other PC's have lost their jobs because of other things like going to the press and lying about being there when they were not ... Mitchell;'s evidence it would appear was not matched by the CCTV the evidence of the PC in his written notes were accepted by the judge as accurate .....and the "pleb "PC as he it is believed he now WAS called has counter sued Mitchell for £200,000 damages for what he was put through by his accusation he fabricated the evidence . So now the rich man loses some of his riches and I hope the PC pays off his mortgage if he has one ......

Wooly.....No body seems to know ! It seems a strange word to use if he had served the time he was given to do .

This is from Services Forum :

This is what Wikipedia has to say, having first referred to him as a 'former UN peacekeeper':

''In February 1975, he was commissioned into the Royal Tank Regiment, serving in Cyprus during the 1970s. His commission was terminated in October 1975. He then transferred to the General List of the Territorial and Army Volunteer Reserve and was given seniority in his rank from 10 March 1975............ He resigned his British Army commission on 9 February 1977 after serving in the Royal Tank Regiment for eight months on a Short Service Commission.''
9. "The Kremlin has been betting on the National Front," Jauvert said. "It considers the party able to take power in France and potentially reverse the course of European history in favour of Moscow".

The Kremlin will be betting on anybody that can help it keep Ukraine out of the EU and away from any chance of joining NATO so the Americans can have a base on their doorstep .
10. Its not so much the big supermarket filling stations that are providing "coffee stops " with plenty of space to pull round the long stayers that delay people and wind them up ..

Its the roadside ones with the small convenience shop and six pumps with no space down the middle to overtake that are now putting in coffee machines Along with hot pies and sausage roll cabinets and bar stools so people can have a drink and snack. When I am on the road like many other people I have a time-table to work to

Places where I have to wait to get onto or away from a pump to fill up while a coffee and pie is consumed I will now be avoiding . If motorists want to stop to eat and drink when on the road they should pull into a place where they can park up to do it ....like at a cafe !
11. Costa Coffee I notice are putting machines to dispense their huge paper cups of coffee in more and more UK petrol stations. Having waited an age for a driver to return to a car yesterday while tying to get to the pump at a very busy filling station . The driver eventually returned to her car with two cups of coffee and I watched her drive off drinking from one of them . Apart from the annoying delays these coffee machines cause people wanting to fill up they tempt idiots to do what I witnessed and become a menace on the road.
12. My Brother in Law is in his 80's . He tells me when he was a child he saw water running over the road through the cast iron walls of a bridge where we now look down a good 20 feet to the river. The powers that be tell us they have "tamed " the river with flood prevention measures ... Oh yea .....They may have permitted houses and businesses to go up that now have river frontage but my brother in laws words would prevent me ever wanting to live there ... I believe whats happened once can happen again.. These weather events we are getting now are going to be causing a lot of people to re plan where they put buildings ,

£1.1 billion: that’s how much massive banks like HSBC and RBS coughed up this week in UK fines. [1] That’s a lot of unexpected cash. Together we can make sure the government spends it well.

The NHS is desperately in need of more money: squeezed services, short-cuts in care, longer waiting times. [2] So let's challenge the government to put this unexpected cash from the banks to good use - protecting our NHS.

George Osborne’s making the decision right now. He wants us to think that the government are good for the NHS. Let’s make him - and his Treasury - prove it. If tens of thousands of us sign a petition today telling him to put that £1.1bn into the NHS, we could make it embarrassing for him to refuse.

Click here to sign the petition to the Treasury now:

The government have used the money they've received from misbehaving banks for social good before. Last year, they spent the fines on help for war veterans.

14. The other day he was taken to a house he had not been to for FIVE years . While there Charlie started to howl .....Charlie never howls well I have never heard him ... There were two other dogs in the house but in another part and they did not come together. They also started to howl ... Charlie never bothers with other dogs he is very good that way but this day he was not going to to be told to shut up. The end result was to put the dogs together and then the madness started chasing each other round the garden all having a great time ...

Charlie had just been reunited after five years with his mum and dad .
15. Lindal1000 wrote :The irony here is that because many of the jobs are paid below the living wage in the UK, the fact that are working actually throws more people onto benefits as they become entitled to family credit and other top ups.

I listened to a radio item on low wages in the UK and what I thought was bad was the way carers who go into homes are only paid for the hours they do in the home . An example mentioned was a carer who put in five hours a day . Two of which were spent driving herself to and from homes so her "wages " were 3 hours at basic rate . Which I believe is £6.50 ... That is all wrong IMO
16. [The European Parliament] Recalls its view that the fiscal situation of Member States can be eased through a new system of own resources to finance the Union budget that will reduce gross national income contributions, thus enabling Member States to meet their consolidation efforts without jeopardising EU funding to support investment in economic recovery and reform measures; underlines, therefore, the importance it attaches to the new high-level group on own resources, which should lead to a true reform of EU financing;”

UKIP voted against that . so they do in fact vote for something important at times . But Lib -Dems and Labor were keen to vote for it... so are you happy they did ...thus giving the right for Brussels to tax you directly ?
17.
Mrs Q has bought a dozen of those poppies. Half the money goes to The Tower of London to help maintain it and the other half to one of the military charities or something like that. In truth I was not paying attention when she told me.
This from some time ago shows how its financed .
