  1. Two years later!!  Did you find anyone?  Are you still in Metz, as we are considering moving there.  If so, how have you found it? Thanks Dale
  2. I am totally shocked at the prices in French shops, DIY in particular.  I am not even taking into consideration the fall in Sterling against the Euro.  What is the secret of getting materials at a reasonable price, am I missing something here?  I am considering asking the in-laws to bring items with them from the UK or travelling over the border to Germany.  How do the French afford to shop in Bricorama etc? Thanks Dale
  3. Thanks for a very informative answer.  Good job I have wi-fi radio [:)] Cheers Dale
  4. Does France have DAB radio?   Thanks Dale
  5. Hi Is anyone impartial?  I have the removal company recommending a company, the mortgage broker, magazine articles.  Of course I will shop around and register with a few and see who gives me the best deal. Thanks Dale
  6. Hi I have now received the CdV in the post(normal post) from the Notaire.  I have to send it back normal post and he will send me the final version with both parties signatures by registered post.  I then have my seven days to withdraw.  I transferred the deposit last week from my German bank account.  For the final payment, I have my capital in sterling so I am using a FX company recommended by my mortgage broker to send the remaining monies to the notaire.   We are going over to Beaune for the final signing over of the house, as the house will be sold as seen. Cheers Dale
  7. Hi Is it advisable to have personal liability insurance in France as it is in Germany.  The reason being, if you break something for example in another person's house , they will claim on your insurance.   Can anyone advise? Thanks Dale
  8. Hi Does anyone know of a website such as moneysupermarket.com that exists in France?  I have searched via google and not really found sites that analyse the best deals on; credit cards, savings accounts etc. thanks Dale

  11. Hi I have just had an offer for a house accepted in France and I now have to sign the compromis du vente.  I have two options: go in person(could be expensive) or have the notaire sign on my behalf(not sure of costs).  I have two questions, has anyone taken the latter option themselves and were you able to transfer the money by bank for the deposit? Many thanks Dale
  12.  Finally, we have found somewhere we would like to move to in France.  After many months searching especially in the SW, we have now decided it's Beaune for us.  We have been over  to look at houses and will be going again at the month's end.  Is there anyone on the forum living in and around Beaune and can give me an idea what it's like to live there? Is there any news on the Ryanair flights from Dijon to London? Many thanks Dale
  13.    Hi Is anyone living in around Nolay, Bergundy?  If so, can you write to me and tell me about your experience of living there. many thanks Dale

  16.     Hi Is anyone living in and around Castelnaudary?  If so, what is it like to live there, are there enough things to do and see during the winter months?  We are early 40's no children, looking for a town that is fairly busy, where there are things to do and see in the area: walking, cycling etc Many thanks Dale
  17. Hi Ian Many thanks for your posting. My situation will be a little different in that I will be employed by a UK company and paid in sterling into a UK bank.  I have read that a lot of people are travelling every week from Bergerac to the UK to work, so I was wondering how they manage this in terms of tax etc. I will keep researching. Cheers Dale
  18. Thanks for the reply.  With Nimes being 1hr 25 away, although the announcement for the house says 45 mins(in a jet) is close for us, as we also like the option of the city, and this represents more work opportunities for me in the future.  I would still be interested if any expats are living there. Regards Daley
  19.    Hi Is anyone living in and around Le Vigan (Gard 30120)?  I have seen a house for sale there that I intend to come a see and although I have visited the Gard on several occasions, I have never been to this town or it's surronding towns-villages.   If anyone is living there that could give me an insight into daily life and especially that of an ex-pat (I am 40 years old). Many thanks Daley
  20.    Hi Is anyone out there living in France the weekend and working in the EU during the week?  I am considering this and wondered if anyone was able to offer advice on health(my wife will live in France full-time), tax, banking etc  We are looking to buy a house however I would be paid in sterling but will look into having a french mortgage.  Is anyone else living this lifestyle that can offer advice? Regards Daley
  21.     Hi You should try looking on the website for catering called, l'hotellerie  www.lhotellerie.fr In this website you can look under employment and you will find lots of jobs for chefs both long and short-term.  I am assuming you speak French, as the website is in French.  I have worked in Brussels at a top hotel and I believe that if you have the necessary qualifications or experience it should not be a problem finding a job. Good luck Dale link made live by a moderator
  22.     Hi As a matter of interest where did you advertise your B&B? Regards Dale
  23.     Hi I have been reading the BBC website and watching BBC World about the current crisis in the wine industry i.e. surplus ordinary wine, just about everywhere.  In light of this there must be quite a few vineyards within France that are only kept going by subsidies from the EU.  Does anyone know of anyone that has taken over an exisiting loss making vineyard and turned it into something else (still in agriculture) and has received an EU grant for doing so? Regards Dale
  24.     Firstly, I apologise if this question has been asked before.  I have been through the forum archives looking for my answer and haven't found it. I want to buy a house in France and to supplement the re-payments and to keep my wife focused (she has already had one experience as a trailing wife and didn't enjoy it) so we want to set up a B&B.  I plan to continue working as a B&B will not support us, so we will not be dependent on the B&B, but anything we earn is a plus.  I have made some enquiries with reference to mortgages and it seems if I intend to use the house as a business I can not have a mortgage.  My question is "is there a way around this"? Thanks for reading Dale
  25. Thanks alot for the feedback, but maybe I have put the net in the wrong pond on this occasion [;-)]
