  1. Personal digs like that I really not fair and irrelevant.

My OH also worked regularly on a Sunday for 2/3 of his career- but I still didn't get the urge to shop on a Sunday.

Yes we could say Monday, or whatever day may be better - but it would be impossible to suit everybody! You know I am a total agnostic Woolie, but Sunday it is for whatever reasons- so I'll stick to that. When our new Tesco where we lived in UK until recently, opened with 24/7 opening - we were assured by Tesco bosses that NOBODY would be forced to work night or Sundays- and that these shifts would be covered by students, semi-retired or retired people and other staff by CHOICE. Last year I was in the shop when a lot of staff rumbling was going on. As I had got friendly with a French woman who worked there- she explained they had just got a letter stating that shifts would be given by management and would not be up for discussion, due to the inability to take on enough staff willing to do unsociable hours. Some of the cashiers were furious, some in tears because of special family situation.

Yes there is a demand - BUT.... I went twice to shop at night to see what was going on. Once at 11.30 and once at 2am on return from the airport - both times there were families shopping with young kids- WHY? So sad to see kids dragged along screaming, having tantrums - on a beautiful Sunday - fantastic parks around, lovely countryside, good public transport to get there, swimming pools, etc.  No wonder more UK kids are obese and unfit with shopping being the only sport/hobby so many of them do with their family. VERY SAD.

  3. I trust you all to have the ability, whether retired or not - to be sufficiently organised not to need to shop 7 days a week!! It is not 'la mer à boire' -

I don't do the washing or ironing on a Sunday either - keep it for sport, nature, resting, family - even though I am a total agnostic. It is really nice an civilised to have a SPECIAL/DIFFERENT DAY

  4. The problem with 'tradition' is that the cruelty inherent in a tradition is often as as acceptable, or even desirable for some - at a local level- whereas other forms are seen as barbaric. |Badger baiters in Yorkshire may consider that what they do is upholding the tradition of 'working' dogs and terriermen- like their counterpart who badger dig or bait in France or Eastern Europe. Japanese think whale hunting is upholding tradition, and so do those Northern Canadians who club baby seals to death. If you have been brought up catching and killing pigs without stunning, as I have seen done in Normandy - it seems 'quite normal' and traditional- same with using live birds to attract others, etc, etc, etc. I don't care which is 'worse' or 'worst' - ir doesn't make the others any less cruel.

I personally feel that many of those traditions should not survive into the 21st Century. So many have been stopped - like throwing goats from Church Towers to predict the weather, or bear baiting- it's time for others to go to.

  5. I just cannot remember! Isn't that terrible! Nice boy and very nice family. Shame on me! I remember swimming in the Lake and the water temp was 11C.

Cara IS sooooooooo cute, despite a tad of jaundice today, but not serious. Looks exactly like her mum did when when was born.

  6. et voilà, mon secret is 'out'!!! LOL

I am in the UK Fi as little granddaughter Cara born on Thursday, and babysitting 3 year old grandson. Drizzling here tonight - 14C this afternoon. My neighbour in the Jura told me on phone weather rubbish in Jura since we left!

Gerardmer! Memories of my teenagehood - had a boyfriend from Gerardmer when I was about 14! Can't even remember his name - LOL - his parents had a scierie at the entrance to the village. That WAS a long time ago.

  7. LOL Sweet - a typo of course! How was the trip? Get in touch soon re dates for next Spring! Can't wait.

BTW who can tell me the equivalent of 'teaching a granny to suck eggs' in French? Just can't think (not slept much last 3 nights babysitting and hospital etc.)

  8. this is just how I got started Fi.

I did realise after some time that although I enjoyed it, I really wanted to understand my own language and how to teach it better. I volunteered as a French assistante at our local 6th Form - and got fascinated with the whole thing. when my youngest started school, I went on to University to do a Bachelor of Education Degree - to teach German and Environmental studies. I did however end up teaching French (my MT) and German- and later English.

Providing you make it clear that you are not qualified and keep your fees relatively low- and mainly concentrate on gaining oral confidence - Go for it.

A word of warning - it can be addictive and lead you to further study, etc. I really enjoyed my career - and continue to teach now I have moved to the Jura- although only on a 'swap basis' (a neighbour does my ironing, and another teached OH the accordeon - in exchange for lessons for their children, so far). Bonne chance

How can anyone teach without humour, I do not know! And you can pick my brain anytime (whatever is left of it.xx

  9. having just become a grandmother for the second time yesterday - I am not really in favour of a pandemic just now - than you Chris- (but I see what you mean!)

Do you Chris believe that we cannot change the outcome at all in anyway by changing our behaviour.

(.. and yes, an awful lot of land, pesticides, insecticides are used to produce tobacco, wine and beer)
