1. Thank you for the suggestions for good quality wet foods.

Today I received a delivery of Arden Grange, yes it’s expensive but my dog means a lot to me, fortunately he liked it. [:)]

  2.
A friend of mine was married to a french vet who always maintained one big petfood maker (begins with F) actually added adictive additives to entice animals to eat their products and get them hooked on it.
I find that quite alarming, if this vet suspects something I wish he would report it.

Val_2, can you narrow the list a bit? I know only 3, Friskies, Fido and Florics is it one of these?

I find it quite sad that some owners feed their pets on the same old rubbish day in day out without even a change of brand or taste.

  3.
We are considering buying several rooms of furniture in the US and shipping it all to France. I have tried to get a straight answer from French authorities (consulate, embassy, douane, etc.), from shipping companies and all their respective websites to no avail. Before we buy the furniture, we have to know, how much customs duty is it going to add to the price? Are we talking 20%? 50%? 100%? 200%? Clearly, our decision may change depending on how much more it will cost. THANK YOU!
Having purchased furniture in the US, UK and France, I would rate the costs as UK reasonable, US expensive and FR very expensive.

For me, I would buy and ship from the UK.

I used to have small items shipped from the US to UK, even with the shipping and duty costs it was well worth it, a mate even shipped a 25ft boat +trailer+SUV over, it was cheap even with the taxes.

Shipping stuff from the US to FR is expensive in my experience, the last few times I tried it, I was taxed the same rate on the merchandise AND the shipping costs! This was with UPS, DHL and Fedex.

I argued like hell about this but like you, I could never get any sense out of the douane.

    Good luck.

  4. Combien de bises? This used to be a nightmare for me when I first arrived in France. Remembering who gave or expected what? Some were two, others three or four or could be just a handshake.

Two I can tolerate but one family were all into the 4 category and there were 6 women! So on a visit 24 bises going in and 24 going out, now don’t get me wrong, if they were Brooklyn Decker look-alikes I wouldn’t mind but……..[;-)]

  5. I understood the ‘choose to be idle’ bit to mean living off the state and relying on others for support.

I took mandatory retirement at an earlier age than most and haven’t worked since. I just do the usual household jobs etc without working for a living; I survive totally on my pension and not handouts and adjust my lifestyle accordingly to the actual cost of living. In my opinion this is not idleness.

    Norman

I may be early retired, but I can assure you that I am not idle!!!!!!

He did not say that you were, he wrote:

'when in fact it is only  early retired people who choose to be idle who are in that situation.'

However, the pilots from Air France were criticising the alarm system, being too noisy and hard to tell where there is a malfunction, and from the sound of it, it cannot have helped.

Poor excuse- audible alarms can normally be cancelled.

  8.
CA are doing this all the time now. [:@]
In some cases they will send the code to an email address, in other cases to a mobile, which I did not have until my recent spell away from home.
My Fr C/C people insist on sending a code by mobile. I do not have one either. You will see on the merchant’s website when they ask for this code, there is provision for poor or no  mobile network available cases. Click on this and normally they will request your birth date instead.

  9. I bought the pc with a QWERTY from their Fr. Site. Possibly with a Fr. Card but I have used my UK card several times on Fr. Mail order.

There seems to be a real tightening up on card purchases with UK cards, hence my call to them this morning after blocking 2 transactions, I missed out my middle initial!

  10. From pixmania.fr I bought a UK spec netbook, good discount and no problems filling out the order form exactly as requested.

I understand that card fraud depts do not like orders sent to other that the card holders address.

Try telephoning them with your details.

Your name entered should match your card exactly, according to a UK c/c company I spoke to this morning.
