  1. My wife and I purchased one way TGV tickeks to Paris from our local French tourist office.

We told the office that we were over 60 ans, understanding that there could be a discount for this age.We received a small discount for this.

After being on the TGV for a couple of hours, two ticket inspecters checked our tickects but no one else in a fifthy plus plus occupied carriage ( I guess we look English).

They told us that to have these tickets, we needed a 'membership card'for 60 plus?. We told them that we did not have this membership and were not told or asked for proof of one at the time of buying our tickets.

Well, our explanation went down like a lead balloon and they promptly fined us 81 euros.

On our return to France I will cetainly dispute this but this is the final nail in the coffin for us in French/ British relations after previous experiences.
  2. Pachapapa.

    Thank you for your advice

My modem is working and up to date., internet connection and emails are working for the time being.

It is my Alice phone service that has been disrupted as described earlier.

Quote:‘I must help myself’  Should I have to? After all I am paying Alice for a ‘service’.

Well the only way I think I can do that is by taking a few kilometres of cable along with some tools and connecting the line from chez moi to the terminal.

  3. Yes all down to Alice in my opinion.

I wrote to them, in good French, some months back explaining their disconnections at will were unsatisfactory. I received a standard letter that my case would be looked into and I would receive an explanation within the following 14 days.

Well they did not reply, so I wrote again, detailing all my problems.

After a long wait, they wrote a brief note asking me to call 1033! Did they not read my comments? Why could they not pass on my problems to all concerned?

Well now it has been 60 hrs + without an Alice phone, no further word from them as expected and unknown to me when I will be reconnected.

As I wrote earlier, I rate Alice customer service as zero.

  4. Alice ADSL for me is a complete nightmare.

This year I have had several occasions when it has been impossible to get online.

After spending considerable time on the phone, the ‘technician’ realised that the connection was down due to ‘adjustments’ at the exchange.

I also have an Alice phone which stopped working two days ago, after another lengthy call; Alice explained that due to the merger with Free, I would be without a phone connection for a few days.

I have asked for a reimbursement, some hope.

It would have been nice if Alice forewarned me in advance.

Customer service I rate as 0.

As soon as I can, I will change to another ISP and good riddance Alice.

  5. Sorry to pick this up a bit late but our dog was 3 days overdue with his booster rabies jab. That made the passport invalid which our vet failed to mention. Another rabies jab was required, after waiting a ‘compulsory’ 21 days, he then had to have another blood test (80 € + vet consultation 28€) When the result was received a week later, the passport could only be revalidated after another 6 months. I do not think this is a fault of DEFRA; it is the French that only validate the injection for 12 months, where tests have shown it is good for about seven years or more. Better safe than sorry some would say no doubt.

  6. I want to go to the USA with my dog, possibly from Paris with Air France.Naturally, I am very concerned about the welfare of my pet.

Has anyone any suggestions, problems or any experience of this?

    Thank you.

  7. From this very useful website:

    http://www.annett-consultancy.com/article_filling_in_your_French_tax_form.html#UKinterest

For declaring interest etc, they quote:

‘These are declared in total, jointly, for both spouses, and it is the net figure of interest actually received, not the gross pre-tax income figure that is declared. Add together all of the net (after the deduction of tax, the amount actually received) and interest for both spouses, from all sources, by country of origin.’

To my thoughts, this is an advantage. I have a small amount of cash in a UK savings account and any interest earned (not much these days) I declare as outlined above, then quite legally I think, the tax paid on this interest in the UK can be claimed back on UK Gov. form R43 if this sum is below your personal allowance.

  8. I have been requested to complete form 2725 (ISF)

After a lot of reading I think the main residence content’s, i.e. furniture etc can be declared at 5% of all other assets but I am not absolutely sure.

The form explains this in french  but on my translation, it is not clear to me.

I have left this  a bit late for completion but can someone help to clarify this for me please.

    Thank you.

  9. In an earlier thread by Suein56.

     quote

‘ - but you will need to declare any 'winnings' to the French IR if you decide to live here as they are classed as income and not tax-free winnings - as you do not lose your stake, as in the Lottery, if you should win.’

This same advice has been given by a well advertised ‘financial advisor’ whose financial advice to me turned out to be disastrous, so I have my doubts.

With due respect to you Sue, are you 100% certain this is the case?  I have been told that some tax offices regard bonds the same as the lotto and any winnings and are not subject to tax.

    Any thoughts?

  10. MBK,

I posted a laptop back to the UK from the post office by Collissimo, cost  was 37Euros, this included insurance valued at 750Euros. Weight was 5.5 kg.

Incidently, the laptop was an Acer 7720g, bought from PC World (UK)

I understood that the unit had an European guarantee, but this was not the case, Acer sells to PCW without a manufacturers guarantee, so if anything goes wrong, only PCW will repair it FOC. Yes I did check the pc in the UK; all was OK until the next day when I returned to France. After much ‘discussion’, PCW sent me a replacement, the same problem occurred, so another 37 Euros sending it back.

All in all not a good experience not to mention 74 Euros in postage.

A quote from DHL was in the region of 120Euros

  11. Thank you all very much for your replies.

I did have a problem with heures creuses, the contacteur jour/nuit showed red (on) in the window 24/24 and during the night with the water heating, w/m and d/w running the disjonteur tripped very frequently. EDF came, found nothing wrong except that the disjonteur was set incorrectly at 30amps, all seem ok after this was changed to 45amps. Now the problem has returned, not as bad as before but oddly the dis. trips during the day when very little is running, this maybe when the heating pump kicks in.

I do have 30 mil/amp inter/diff at the tableau electrique.

I do have a single phase pump geothermie.

Cathy, I possibly have the same problem as you experienced a too sensitive/faulty disjoncteur.

Anyway thanks again, I will start by calling EDF

    Regards
