1. I'm no expert but when I was first married in 1970 were rented a tiny cottage which was apparently the staff quarters for the officer looking after the fort behind the cottage. This fort was one of a ring built around London supposedly to put up a fight should Napolean III get that far. It had a ditch/moat and underground storage. This one was at Farningham in Kent and there was another at Halstead (Sevenoaks) Kent to my knowledge. I believe a group in parliament known as the blue funk group had them constructed.
2. My sister made a great one when she first moved to France. She announced that ther was a dog breeder locally as she had seen a sign "chien mechant" I dined out one that for a while.
3. You can change your address with CPAM online. www.ameli.fr It is much more simple than visiting your departmental office.
4. Thanks, I would not have thought of using the word provinces. Further  -- I have briefly looked at your link and still the midi does not exist. I once had a French teacher who said she was born there. Where?
5. I still have no idea where the midi, quercy etc are. How do I find out?
6. OK, so perhaps a bit off topic but I find the 'regions' of France confusing. I live near Brive 'le portail riant du Midi' Where exactly is the midi? and where is perigord? and quercy? These are only those locally of which  I am aware.  Berry is also somewhere -- isn't it?
7. Kendal mint cake and stilton in a little pottery jar. I am drooling as I type.
8. It is the conventional slug pellets that contain the metalhyde(must check spelling) They have something added to make them unattractive to dogs and cats but some dogs will eat anything. Furthermore hedgehogs are at risk either from eating the pellets or eating the slugs killed by them. If you are only treating decorative areas there is a product called slugclear available in the UK. It is a liquid and is watered onto the beds and is invisible to animals so there is no temptation to try it. It works really well as it gets to the tiny black slugs that live in the soil and are real pests. However, IT MUST NOT BE USED ON FOOD GROWING AREAS.
9.
I have found out, since I started this thread, that there is a bateria called nematodes that get into the stomachs of slugs and poison them.  These nematodes are harmless to birds and animals and can be used continuously (if you could afford them year round).  There are some firms in the UK that sell them and I have emailed a firm in Suffolk.  Will await the results.
Here is a link to a French company that sells the nematodes. They are very expensive and unless you have only a smallish area to treat pretty impractical. You will not be able to buy them from a UK company as they are live creatures and would not survive the time in the post. http://www.fermedesaintemarthe.com/produits/jardin/02/1014H.htm  Algoflash - and no doubt other companies- sell a product that is based on a ferrous compound rather than the metalahyde(sp) which can be deadly. It is claimed to be usable by bio growers.
10. Larger supermarkets like Leclerc also have them. We hired the last one from Mr Bricolage in Brive. Two things to look out for 1 Check that the lines are in good nick. The suction line in the one we hired disintegrated on us and the shop tried to blame us! 2 Buy the smaller bottles of shampoo on a sale or return basis. There is no quantity discount for the larger bottles and if that last rug is going to mean opening another bottle ......
11. We found it strangely unsettling.  Yes it is lovely but 85% has been de afforested (sp). Farms are diliniated(sp) by post and wire. The whole place has a certain tempory feel. Auckland is full of Japanese language students who favour the loligoth look. We wouldn't go again.
12. You can buy  cookers in France with a separate grill. The make is Falcon. They look similar to the British range cookers, have such things as wok a stand and removable griddle. I have a Belling range cooker which I have been disappointed with. The only drawback with the falcon models (which I saw in But this week) is the price - over 2000€
13. This will be the forth or fifth different username I have had on this forum. Having forgotten (or it may have been corrupted) my password I requested a new one. Even cutting and pasting the new password did not allow me access and the "if you still have problems contact admin by replying to this email" wont work as it is a non reply id. I am using an address which I probably can't read emails from although I can write from it (don't ask) My previous username was sackville. Can admin explain what is happening please?
