  1. Thank you for replies, its not that they are expensive phones we have, so prob just as easy to sell them here in the UK and buy a cheap handset over in france. thanks for advice and help Mark
  2. Hi, this might sound a bit of a weird question, but are the telephone points/connections in France the same as UK? we are moving over in the next couple of months and have recently bought some landline telephones and wondering if they can still be used in France, if not we might as well sell them rather than bring them over and not be able to use them. Thank you Mark
  3. Thank you for your help, I think it is going to be worth my while waiting, besides I want to renovate the barn and 2 bedroom cottage as gites before I need to worry about registering and getting work in. thanks again Mark
  4. thanks for the help, not been on for a while and guessed it had been brought up somewhere else. thanks for your help Mark
  5. Hi, I am just asking for some advice, we have just today returned from france where we have signed for a property (in the sarthe region of Pays de la Loire) We are going to be living in France permanantly. In the Uk I am a time served joiner/carpenter and have had my own business for 20 yrs We are now a family business doing all building works from groundworks and foundations to internal finishings, so we offer the complete building works, both to new build housing and to renovations. While over signing for the house we spoke to quite a few people regarding registering my business over in France, and was told that if I can hold on till January 2009 that the tax lawa are changing to make it easier to set up a business, and that tax/social payments will be made on monthly earnings rather than up front. I can hold off till january as I have plenty on the property I want to do, so that would keep me out of trouble for a few months. Could anyone shed some light on this and if there is any truth to this? and explain in lay-man terms!! I'm great with my hands but hopless with paper work - hence my wife doing all my books accounts etc so straight forward details appreciated. We are due to move over middle of october, but, will be going back in couple of weeks to have another look over the house and take some proper dimensions Many thanks Mark
  6. in relation with my father in law when I started the thread mainly, the way I read it then it is as everyone has been saying, he is full pensionable age and he would qualify for the health care he needs if he was to move over full time, or am I reading the bits that suit and not taking everything in a whole context. thank you.
  7. Can anyone give any insight to the piece in the Telegraph click here thank you
  8. yes that was one of te reasons they went to the doctors to see if they could get more than a months worth of the the morphin patches, but with the law the way it is, and the Shipman case it all has to be accounted for and they wouldnt let them have more than a month at a time. Tony I was meaning them do anything illegally, they would buy a property in the uk, and use the place in France as a holiday home, and split there time between UK and France, but helping us get set up initially would have menat him wanting to stop for 3-6 moths fulltime Mark
  9.  think he has come to terms with the fact his mobility allowance would be terminated ( the car could come over to france for 6mths of the yr but afer that it would have to go back) but he was more worried that what he has left (ie pensions) would be eaten up in him having to purchase his own tablets/morphin patches. He could keep a address in the UK and go over each month to collect te patches, but sometimes he struggles to get up/down stairs so thats not really an option if it meant him travelling and flying on a set day and it happened to be one of his bad days. this is making interesting reading and  do appreciate this effort. thank you again
  10. well in response to the earlier replies, my father-in-law has rang the number that was given and told that although at this moment they should be covered, but as there is a new president in France and changes need to be made, they cant promise how things will be in 6 months time. . Any one any ideas?
  11. I really appreciate your help and any further help we need. It jus seemed weird that the doctor would say something like that, and they tend to take the doctors word as gosple. So even for the tablets and patches it would be covered? He needs to see a specialist every 2/3 months, how would that work, would that be covered on the E121?
  12. yes he is past pensionable age, so he doesnt claim incapacity benefits, hey have both worked all their lives and paid a lot of contributuiions and now they find out they wont be entitled? Their doctor told them they might get away with a couple of months then if they are living in France permenantley they wont get anything. [:(]
  13. As I have mentioned in posts on other forums, we are hoping to move to France to live later n this year, my mother and father in law are coming in with us on a joint venture, they are both retired, and both have good private pensions. My father-in-law has a cronic back problem, which means he needs pills and morphin patches every month, he went to see his own doctor yesterday and they have said he wont be able to get these on the French health service, and wouldnt be able to have insurance to cover as its an existing problem that is although not going to get any worse, it is never going to get better. Also he gets a mobility allowance, either a car is subidised or he is entitled to a cash supliment, would he lose these? or wud ther be things in place in France he would be entitled to? Can anyone shed any light or help on te matter, as if they have to fund the tablets and patches themselves it really ends a dream of moving for them.[:(] thanks in advance Mark
  14. to be honest we have not made up our minds where, as long as its reasonably near an airport that we can get cheap flights back or for visitors then we have an open mind, we are going out for 5 days at begining of Feb to look at approx 10 properties in the Limousin area, but by no means made minds up yet, and Pads, I have a wife like that ha ha but if she is happy then im happy... makes lide far more easy going for me that way, and we are learning French too... quickly.. [8-)]
  15. yes great link pads, looks a fantastic place. so out of cornwall and France, which do you think you will opt for?... Mark
  16. from just outside sunny preston (Leyland) well i like to think im the finest tradesman in the northern hemisphere ha ha!! well in the top 3 at the very least. As for your a woman, dont all women want it doing like yesterday never mind 'now' and if all goers well  with the move i would be more than willing to have a look for you. I Know Houghton quite well, we used to keep our horses  up there at Art Wilmars onn or just off Gregson Lane thanks for any help to, do you regret the move? and how long ago did you move? thanks Mark
  17. Hi, we have been looking at the Limosin area, maybe even as far down as Dordogne, near to an airport where likes of Ryanair fly to, we were looking higher up near Brittany or Normandy, with the intentions of being able to nip back over to visit, but as most of our family are up in lancashire we would still have a 5/6 hr car drive from the ferry up to lancashire, so thought it would be cheaper and more convenient to fly to blackpool or Liverpool.
  18. I am very grateful for any advice, we are moving out to France more for the way of life, and not just for work, I will do any exams thats necessary to keep legal just as I do in the UK, as i always say to my clients when they ask if im trained...'time served, not time wasted'..[:D] I have seen a couple of places that need work and will probably spend the 1st 12 months renovating it, but after that I will be looking to keep enough work coming in to tick over, like I said, we are m,oving for the way of life, not for the work. thanks again, and please keep the advice coming.
