1. The easiest way (which I use) is to have a French keyboard: you can change between the two on Windows at the bottom right corner of the screen

There is another way, which is to use a French spell check.

I have one on Thunderbird for all my emails and you can have the add-on for Firefox too (Dictionnaire myspell en  Français)

A third way is to open an email account with Yahoo.fr

Then anything you type to send can be checked and corrected automatically by the Yahoo spellcheck

These all avoid contortions with alt etc

  2. Apparently some people felt that my signature, which had the capacity to tell you where you are connecting from was in some way a problem of Privacy.

In fact, there is no invasion of Privacy, as it is simply a reflection of the

information every site gathers about the people browsing it. Every time you log on to a site that information, and a lot of other stuff is immediately available. (such as your IP, Browser, OS etc)

In some ways I would maintain that it is a salutary warning!

Although it showed  the reader something about location, I stress that I could not see that information; each person received a different reflection, as with a mirror.

  3. You are lucky to have the space for them to ber so far away from your living quarters.

I have them in the space between my ceiling and the floor of the flat above, and often hear them waltzing around.

They come up  out of the égouts, and we have to get the service d'Hygène de la Mairie to come a de- rat periodically.

I have killed them with sachets of poison, with a strong version of a sort of mouse trap (which wasn't a pretty sight), and by battering with a heavy bar, but I'm past this now.

Apparently keeping a terrier discourages them from getting too close, but I dislike dogs.

  4. Of course it depends what they define as "taxes"

There are the two Taxes (foncier and habitation) concerned with your house.

There can be 'Impots sur le revenu' if you are working, or on your pensions

Then there can be other charges, not called taxes, but perceived as such, such as CSG or Social Security charges.

Whether you have to pay these, and which ones depends on your personal circumstances.

  5.
the move to France would not be for financial reasons, hopefully for a far better quailty of life, and to leave the UK before it finally disappears down the plughole.
What do you know that makes you think that France isn't disappearing down the plughole too?

Read the posts about Sarkozy's reforms and the need for them...

  6. The Taxe Foncier is usually paid by the seller for the year, but the Notaire often calculates the proportion you were due to pay and settles that with the seller.

On the other hand, the Taxe d'Habitation for the whole year is the responsibility of the person living in the house on the 1st January

  7. I had Wanadoo (Now Orange) the Internet branch of FT for 10 years, and they were reasonably reliable, but expensive.

I would personally be loath to touch them again after the difficulties they made when I wanted to change to Free, but that is the commercial, not the technical side.

If you are not in a Zone dégroupé it may be worth your while, as I think they are possibly a bit more reliable than others.

The helpline on the other hand is a disaster. They take ages to answer, and cut you off in mid-call after 30 mins even if the matter isn't settled. I had some experience trying to help another Brit who was being accused of spamming from his email address, but who in fact I suspect had got a bug.

In the end we had to open a gmail account for him, and just not use the Orange address.

  8. I agree about Conté,(it's my favorite)  but the essential thing is to AVOID supermarket cheeses, they don't have access to the best ones; go to a specialist or a market, and  taste...

Est-ce que je peux goûter un peu de celui-ci...?

  9. My prediction for 2008:

Modern builds, bought  mainly by French people may hold their own or just stagnate, but I suspect that the old 'character' properties bought largely by foreigners  will drop in price, as a result of the credit crisis, the fall in sterling, the crash in the UK housing market, and the CMU problems.

Perhaps later this will attract French buyers back into the sector and provide a corrective.

    But I am usually wrong[;-)]
