1.
Not an ariel, but a parabol, our ariels were the best placed in my village France that they could be, we needed two. I had called the Diffusion people(those that we pay the tv licence to ) and they had people from Lyon come especially to my house with a van and and mast and voila, we had a half decent picture. My neighbour asked, but was told to get an ariel fitter in, which she would have had to pay.

We left France some time ago now and I have no idea if the people who bought the house had any problems. I have never thought about that until just now. [Www]

What is an ariel and a parabol?
  2.
You're right Jay, and I did mention needing to have "an Amazon-friendly device (Kindle, or a Kindle for PC for instance)"... [:)]
So you did. The Kindle is not really that "friendly". My wife has a Nook and all the books she buys and those I download (from other sources) are not protected so you can "loan them" to others. As you rightly point out the protection can be easily removed from eBooks bought from Amazon so they can be transferred to other devices.

  3.

Can I, in my innocense (and ignorance) ask a question whose answer is not clear to me on these posts.

Can you lend (or borrow) an e-book like you can a real one?  In other words, can you download a book , which you have bought, onto another device?
The simple answer is no, you cannot borrow or lend an ebook purchased on Amazon or iTunes, nor transfer it onto a device other than the one it was downloaded for.

If you download a Steven King book from Amazon, you cannot read it on your iPad, because the the book is formatted to be read on an Amazon-friendly device (a Kindle, or a Kindle for PC for instance). To read it on your iPad, you would need to make another purchase, this time from iTunes.

There are ways and means to remove the restrictions, as I mentioned in a previous post, but this goes against the T&C under which you make your purchases.

This is not the case. In my Amazon Kindle library I have the option to download my books onto my Kindle, PC (& Kindle via USB), iPad and iPhone, you just need the free Kindle app on each device.

    See page 48 section 6.8

We propose to stop issuing residual S1

    forms from 1 April 2014.

    Current Process

6.8.  The UK issues form S1 for non-state

    pensioners, outside the requirements

of the Regulations. This process is

applicable to UK nationals, who are

not in paid employment, and are

    residing in another EEA member

state. The form was introduced in

    1982, primarily to provide healthcare

    cover for early-retirees, allowing them

time to integrate into their new

    country of residence. It provides

them with health cover for up to 2.5

    years.

6.9.  Forecasts indicate that the UK pays

out around £4 million a year in

relation to citizens in receipt of a

    residual S1.

Edit - I suspect you must apply to the issuing office in Colorado

  6. There is still an issue with the possibility of contracting brucellosis from unpasteurised milk although the risk is a lot less than it used to be. I would avoid it, but that is a personal choice. If you google "lait cru" there is a load of info out there.

As to freezing. When we were kids living in the frozen wastelands of Newcatle our milk at school and on the doorstep was often frozen and expanded an inch above the top of the bottle, the silver foil cap having already been removed by birds after the cream.

Rubbish, no doubt Sid or someone will be along soon to tell you how to register it.

I am happy to be proved wrong on this matter but perhaps Mr Jay you might learn to be a little more polite!
I wasn't being impolite, just stating the fact that your post was totally inaccurate. If you have no knowledge of the subject why bother posting?

Are you insuring a huge chateau - 800 euros is a very high price - especially as you have no documentation - are you actually insured?

We were insuring in France for our holiday home but the price just kept going up so we insure in the UK at a very reasonable price, do an Internet search, plus I can understand the documentation.
Very interesting Paul. We pay about 700€ a year house/content insurance but our house is a lot bigger than Wendy's holiday home and we include a gite in ours. However I did search on Google and there are quite a few UK companies that will insure homes abroad and I presume they will be cheaper.

What really interested me was http://www.andrewcopeland.co.uk/gcm.htm car "green card" insurance for UK registered cars. They say they will insure a car but "The vehicle should be kept abroad for 11 months a year". I wonder if that is the reason you see a lot of UK reg. cars running around where the owners obviously live here. I have in mind a **builder** who lived next door to us for several years and never changed the registration on their cars.

  9. That could well be it, I've thrown the packet out now but will retrieve it later to see if I got the spelling wrong. Certainly it was covered in seasoned flour, and very tasty too! We thought it may have been reconstituted or some such rubbish but on cooking it was nice looking fish - hake I think (merlu).
  10. We bought some frozen fish today and after the type of fish it was described as "meunerie". I looked that up and it said "milling"? Some of you bright sparks out there might be so kind and enlighten me as to its relevance to frozen fish?

  11. Are you serious?

Why not pay for a service/goods/food you like and trust. Who are you to say what people should spend their money on? We have French and Spanish cars, a UK Laptop, Chinese SatNav and we like some English food which we buy in a French supermarket.  When we travel to the UK by car we book using the Brittany Ferries English website because the French site is a rip-off. We travel on Ryanair because it is cheaper to the UK and KLM (Dutch) because it’s cheaper long haul.

If we lived in the UK, or anywhere else for that matter, we would still drive a French car, drink French wine and eat French cheese because that’s what we like.

  12. I use Calibre for both our Kindle and Nook. You may also like to think about Kindle for PC (download HERE) then you can have Amazon download your books direct to PC and you can also add books from other sources. In my opinion Claibre is a far superior program and it recognises the Kindle without any problem.

  13.
Thanks everyone, very good advice and insight as always.  We can lower the beam down and yes, we won't really be driving in the dark.  We are spending most of our time in the Northeast and it doesn't get to lighting up time until about 10pm! [:D]
If it's the NE then you are going to need your headlights in the fog and rain!

I got a free sim and for E20 top up they gave me E30 worth of calls...They do top up offers from time to time . Works back in the UK locks onto whoever's   signal seems to be the best in your area
I too like them, I changed from lefrenchmobile when they started charging a monthly fee. I have been using lycamobile for a while now and while on holiday last week used my phone to access the net & download emails etc., no problems and cheap rates.
