1. As far as bathroom, shower-room and toilets are concerned, it's not the actual room which matters, but it's the actual element which pushes the "luxury" level.

If you already have a bath in your bathroom, there's no difference in "luxury" if you replace it with a shower.

But if you add a bathroom, shower-room or WC where there is already one in the property, or if you add a basin to an existing WC, your  house is deemed to have added "luxury" and you're supposed to complete a H1 form to notify the tax people so they can re-assess your house taxes.

These taxes are assessed on old-fashioned grades dating back to the 70s and with each new government and finance minister, there are noises about updating them to bring them in line with modern standard of living (in the hope of raking in more taxes), but that's always been a lot of hot air up to now...

  2.
Right, I am now the proud (?) owner, well the owner, of a Motorola Moto G and it's a nice bit of kit from what I can see, but I still haven't had chance to try any calls on it because free.fr have not delivered my new simm card. 13 daze and counting?
Mr Clair's new SIM from Free took 2-3 days to come through.

(He installed it in his new Moto G!)

My Leclerc credit is down to 2€ and I'm about to switch over to Free too...

Last spring I washed our kingsize, mid-weight duvet, about 240cm x 220cm, in the 18kg machine available locally and it was better than good, it was excellent.

Then I used 1€ worth of drying, ie 10 minutes, in their tumble dryer before draping it over the dryer in our garden. Then I stored in away until winter. Totally worth the 10€ + 1€ cost plus a small amount of effort.

    I second that!

I can do our single duvets with synthetic filling in the WM at home without any problem, one at a time.

The double, king and super-king (all feather/duvet-filled), I take to the local laverie automatique, where I settle in with my Kindle and a bottle (of water!)

  4. This has been quite an adventure![:-))]

How strange it feels to read this again from the first page a year later... [blink]

LAst month, a year after Mr Clair was first fitted, one hearing-aid stopped working properly and the problem was resolved very quickly.

By my calculations, and accounting for the grants and CPAM + mutuelle refunds, we ended up paying 70€ for the hearing aids (quoted at 3000€) and around 5€ for the batteries.

  5. Thank you both!

The gadget has just arrived but I have to wait for Mr Clair to come back from work, just because he'll want to be the one to use it first!

For those wondering what this does, it simply transmits whatever you see on your laptop/tablet/Smartphone to a Smart TV.

"Plug Chromecast into any HDTV, connect it to Wi-Fi, then send videos and

more from your smartphone, tablet or laptop to your TV with the press

    of a button."

    "With Chromecast, you can

easily enjoy your favourite online content on your HDTV – movies, TV

programmes, music, photos and more from BBC iPlayer, Netflix, YouTube,

Google Play Movies and TV, Google Play Music and Chrome. No more

huddling around small screens and tiny speakers. Chromecast

automatically updates to work with a growing number of apps. Certain

applications are optimised for Chromecast. Streaming quality for other

    content may vary.

    Remote-free:

Chromecast works with Android tablets and smartphones, iPhone and iPad

devices, Chrome for Windows, Chrome for Mac, and Chromebooks. Browse

for what to watch, control playback and adjust volume using your device.

You won't have to learn anything new."

  6. This works well for now, but Sky are aware that people are using the £10 Now TV box and registering with Now TV to use the box in the manner I have described. They may well decide to tighten their procedure...

Within Plex, there are private individuals who offer to share their libraries of stored films and TV series, etc, for a modest monthly or annual fee.

I binged on all 7 series of Breaking Bad last month... [Www]

  7. As dictated to me by Mr Clair:

    1) Get you computer and install Plex Media Server on it. Info HERE.

    2) Purchase a Now TV box from Ebay or other place. This is the white box at £10 (which cannot be used to view geo-critical channels, as you cannot enter your VPN details in it. To do that, you need the Roku 3 box.)

    3) Sign up to Now TV from your computer (no fee, and quit the registration process before entering your credit card details, unless you want to enter them. Make up an address if needed (Mr Clair cannot remember if he needed to do so or not)

    4) Read up from this link to put Plex on your Now TV box and access the various channels.

  8.
Just wondered id anyone has managed to get one of these working in France (proxy server etc) and if so, was it worth it, and how difficult was it to get up and running?

As dictated to me by Mr Clair:

We're using a £10 Now TV Roku box.

We have access to thousands of films, TV series, documentaries, FilmOn, on our TV from the internet without having to pay any kind of fee.

(for instance, I have already watched all - bar the final being shown tonight - of the US series True Detective)

Google Plex to get basic info.

With the Roku 3, you can enter your VPN details in the box itself to watch BBC iPlayer and others channels which are geo-critical.

    Thank you. :)

  10. Off the top of my head and without looking at any reguls, I would say that the DDASS (direction des affaires sanitaires et sociales) or its equivalent in your departement would be the place to contact. They deal with anything relating to public health.

The "look" of the pool is totally subjective, but the risk to health is the aspect to emphasise when contacting them, particularly if you have young children and/or people with vulnerable health... [Www]

This said, there is no guarantee they will act, but it's certainly worth a try...

Have you had a word with the pool owners? Maybe a quiet, concerned word in someone's ear at the mairie?
